RPGs With The Most Interesting Magic Systems

Magic is a common feature in role-playing games, especially those set in fantasy worlds. Learning a new spell, like in games such as Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest, can be a key part of the experience. However, the way magic systems work tends to be fairly similar across different RPGs.

I’ve noticed something really cool in a few RPGs lately – the magic systems aren’t just about bigger, more damaging spells. They’re way more complex! They can improve your character’s stats, and you can even mix different types of magic together to create totally new attacks. If you’re like me and love to really dive into how magic works in a game, these RPGs are full of systems you can spend hours figuring out.

Final Fantasy 7

Trusting In Materia

In Final Fantasy 7, characters learn magic by equipping special crystals called Materia. These Materia come in different colors, and each one grants access to different spells. While some Materia let characters cast attack spells like Fire or Ice, others provide helpful support abilities.

Different colored Materia offer unique ways to customize your characters. For instance, blue Materia can alter how green Materia functions – combining Fire with All, for example, makes your attack hit every enemy. Pink Materia modifies stats like HP, red Materia summons monsters, and yellow Materia unlocks new attack options. This wide range of possibilities allows for deeper character customization than many other RPGs.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Building Upon Skills

Each character in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 fights in a unique way. Some use magic, while others depend on special skills. What makes combat interesting is how these abilities interact with each other. Lune perfectly illustrates this – she uses elemental magic powered by ‘Stains,’ which are elemental orbs created by other characters’ attacks.

Sciel is a character who fights using dark magic and tarot cards. As she attacks or supports her allies, her maximum potential grows. Like all characters, she has a skill tree that players can customize and experiment with to create powerful builds and defeat opponents.

Avowed

Infecting The Environment

Avowed features a unique magic system. You don’t need to create a traditional mage character to cast spells. Instead, players can discover Grimoires, which allow limited spellcasting, offering an engaging way to experience magic.

Players who focus on spellcasting can use magic to creatively interact with the world, not just in battles. For instance, ice spells can freeze water surfaces, making new pathways and shortcuts – a particularly helpful trick when exploring the starting area.

Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow

Monster Mash

In Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, defeating monsters can let your character learn their abilities. These abilities come in two main types: some are attacks you can actively use, like throwing a spear as a skeleton, while others change how you move around the game world, such as gaining the ability to glide.

The game focuses on skills that improve your character’s stats, rather than traditional spells. These skills act as the game’s magic system, and it’s easy to get caught up in repeatedly battling enemies to unlock new ones.

Chrono Trigger

By Your Powers Combined

In Chrono Trigger, characters begin by using simple physical attacks. Later in the game, after traveling to the End of Time, each character learns to specialize in a particular element. For instance, Crono can learn lightning-based attacks, and Marle can learn ice attacks.

Learning magic spells lets characters perform powerful combo attacks, like double or even triple hits. For instance, Lucca and Marle can mix fire and ice spells to create a devastating bomb. While the magic system isn’t overly complex, these combo attacks really make this time-traveling RPG stand out.

Persona 5

Demon Fusion

In Persona 5, like many games in the Shin Megami Tensei series, a key part of the gameplay involves building relationships with creatures – in this case, Personas. Each member of your team has their own Persona which grows stronger, learns new abilities, and gains spells as you play.

Players control a main character, often called Ren, who can form bonds with multiple Personas. These Personas can be combined through fusion, allowing players to create powerful, customized beings with unique magical abilities. A wide variety of spells lets players exploit enemy weaknesses, earning them additional turns in combat.

Hogwarts Legacy

Flick And Swish

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I was so excited to finally get to be a student at Hogwarts in Hogwarts Legacy! You actually get to go to classes and learn spells and potions, which are super helpful as you explore the castle and everything around it. It’s a dream come true!

Unlike standard RPGs with basic fire or ice spells, the magic in Hogwarts Legacy is much more versatile. Players can use spells for everyday tasks like creating light or moving objects, as well as in combat to stun or disarm opponents. This makes battles more dynamic and adds interesting challenges to exploring the world.

Immortals Of Aveum

Turning Guns Into Magic

In Immortals of Aveum, a world torn apart by magical warfare, players don’t use enchanted guns. Instead, they utilize various magical tools and symbols to create the effects of familiar weapons, like sniper rifles and rocket launchers.

Players can improve each sigil they discover, and the items they find have varying levels of rarity. Immortals of Aveum stands out as a truly unique first-person shooter because, in addition to spell-like gun attacks, you can also create shields for defense and a whip to confuse enemies—all powered by a fully realized magic system.

Dark Cloud 2

Monica’s Turn

In Dark Cloud 2, players can choose between two characters, Monica and Max, each with unique abilities and weapons. Monica uses armbands to cast spells, such as fireballs, and swords for close-range combat. Improving her equipment unlocks new attacks.

What’s really interesting is Monica’s ability to gather medals from monsters. Once she has them, she can transform into those monsters and use their attacks, even magical ones. Monica is generally more skilled with magic than Max, who depends a lot on technology.

Final Fantasy 8

Draw!

The Final Fantasy series boasts many excellent magic systems, making it difficult to choose just one as the best. Final Fantasy VIII takes a particularly unusual approach to gameplay, and that extends to its magic system. Instead of learning spells by gaining levels or finding items, characters have to actively ‘Draw’ magic from enemies, essentially absorbing it from them.

In this game, if a character learns five Cure spells and casts one, they’ll only have four left until they learn more. What’s really useful is that learned spells can boost a character’s stats during battle, but you need to unlock special abilities, called GFs (similar to Summons in other games), to do so. It’s a bit complicated at first, but becomes straightforward with a little practice.
