Rumor: 2022 Open-World RPG May Be Coming to Nintendo Switch 2

Summary

  • Gotham Knights may come to the Switch 2.
  • The 2022 open-world ARPG was previously rated for the Switch, but never actually landed on Nintendo’s first hybrid console.

It appears that there might be plans for Gotham Knights to release on what some are calling the Nintendo Switch 2. If this were true, it would make the Nintendo Switch 2 the fourth platform where Gotham Knights has been made available.

It’s been speculated that the production of The Switch 2 started towards the end of 2024, and there’s even a possibility it could begin in late September. This conjecture is supported by an increase in hardware leaks that offer insights into or visual representations of the upcoming console. However, game leaks for The Switch 2 haven’t been as frequent during this timeframe.

It appears that Gotham Knights could be a possible game for Switch 2. This speculation comes from YouTuber Doctre81 (via Universo Nintendo), who found a LinkedIn profile of a Polish game developer mentioning his work on optimizing two versions of the 2022 ARPG for platforms that have not yet been released. Since a Switch version of Gotham Knights was rated as early as September 2023, it’s plausible to consider Nintendo’s current-generation console as one of these unannounced systems, especially since the Switch version did not launch as expected in 2023.

The speculation is that an as-yet-unseen version of the game will be tailored for Nintendo’s upcoming console. Given that the Switch 2 is backward-compatible, producing a port for this new system might not be overly complex. Interestingly, both references to the two undisclosed versions of Gotham Knights were eliminated from the LinkedIn profile prior to Doctre81’s report in early January 2025.

Gotham Knights Switch Port Has Presumably Been Abandoned

Given that Gotham Knights faced performance issues on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, it’s understandable to assume that the developers might have encountered challenges when trying to adapt the game for the comparatively less powerful Nintendo Switch. Moreover, since we’ve been aware of its Switch rating online for over two years now, it’s conceivable that this version of the open-world RPG has been put on hold, with developers possibly focusing on a potential Switch 2 port instead.

Few titles have been officially confirmed for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, as the company has yet to publicly unveil its long-awaited console. However, a handful of games have been hinted to be coming to the Switch successor, such as the open-world RPG “My Time at Evershine” and the RPG similar to Persona titled “Bestiario”. British studio Playtonic Games has also suggested that their platformer “Yooka-Laylee” may see a release on the Switch 2. More third-party titles are likely to be announced for the Switch successor once the console is officially unveiled, which Nintendo has stated will happen before the end of its current fiscal year, ending March 31st. The Switch 2 is therefore unlikely to hit stores before Q2 2025 at the earliest.
