  • Despite past failures, Blizzard aims for success with the new StarCraft shooter.

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt and countless hours spent in the StarCraft universe, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and skepticism regarding Blizzard Entertainment’s latest attempt at creating a StarCraft shooter. The series has always held a special place in my heart, and the thought of experiencing it from a different perspective is intriguing. However, the studio’s past attempts with Ghost and Ares have left me a little wary.

It appears that yet another action game based on “StarCraft” might be under development at Blizzard Entertainment. Notably, they’ve attempted creating two “StarCraft” shooter games previously.

In recent times, the popular real-time strategy (RTS) franchise from Blizzard Entertainment, often hailed as one of the greatest RTS series ever made, hasn’t seen much action. The most recent addition to the series was StarCraft: Remastered, which came out in 2017; while generally well-liked, some critics considered it an unnecessary endeavor. This lull in new experiences isn’t due to Blizzard Entertainment shying away from further developing their IP, as they have reportedly been secretly working on more StarCraft games behind the scenes.

In his forthcoming book titled “Play Nice: The Evolution, Decline, and New Direction of Blizzard Entertainment,” video game journalist Jason Schreier disclosed that the company has secretly been developing a new “StarCraft” shooter game. This unpublicized project reportedly involves Vice President and General Manager Dan Hay, who previously led Ubisoft’s successful “Far Cry” series and joined Blizzard Entertainment in 2022. In a recent episode of IGN’s Podcast Unlocked, Schreier mentioned that the development of this new “StarCraft” game was ongoing when he wrote his book, which is set to be published on October 8.

New StarCraft Shooter Reportedly in Development

Blizzard Entertainment cannot quit making StarCraft shooters, Schreier quipped, making a reference to a famous line that was delivered by Jake Gyllenhaal’s character, Jack Twist, in the 2005 romance drama Brokeback Mountain. The studio previously tried to create two shooters based on its sci-fi series, StarCraft: Ghost and Ares, but these just ended up joining the list of games that Blizzard Entertainment has canceled over the years. This ongoing third attempt could be luckier than its predecessors, according to Schreier.

Initially announced in 2002, the game StarCraft: Ghost faced numerous setbacks and was eventually canceled in 2014. On the other hand, rumors suggest that Ares was shelved to allow Blizzard Entertainment to focus on Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. This decision appears to have been beneficial for the company, as Diablo 4 has amassed a revenue of $1 billion since its launch in June 2023. Approximately $150 million of this total income came from in-game transactions within Diablo 4.

During Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2024 broadcast, it was announced that the remastered versions of both StarCraft and the Campaign Collection of StarCraft 2 will be available on Game Pass starting November 5. The Campaign Collection encompasses Wings of Liberty, Heart of the Swarm, Legacy of the Void, and the Nova Covert Ops DLC.
