According to reports, Ubisoft has scrapped plans for a new Assassin’s Creed game that was in early development. The game, set right after the American Civil War, would have been the first in the series to feature the Ku Klux Klan as enemies. Sources say the project was canceled because of concerns about the current political environment.
The years immediately following the Civil War (1865–1877), known as Reconstruction, were a turbulent time focused on ending slavery and helping formerly enslaved people become part of American life – the same issues that caused the war in the first place. Although no *Assassin’s Creed* game has ever been set during this period, reports suggest a game exploring Reconstruction was planned, but ultimately canceled.
Ubisoft Reportedly Nixed Reconstruction-Era Assassin’s Creed Game in 2024
According to reporting from Game File’s Stephen Totilo, Ubisoft cancelled a planned Assassin’s Creed game set during the Reconstruction era around July 2024. Sources within the company say the game was in early development—it had been approved by leadership but was still several years from being finished. Ubisoft Quebec, a studio with a long history of working on Assassin’s Creed titles, was reportedly developing the game.
Canceled Assassin’s Creed Game Would Have Had Players Fight the KKK, Sources Claim
According to sources, the canceled Assassin’s Creed game would have featured a Black protagonist who was once enslaved. He would have been recruited by the Assassins and then returned to the American South to fight for equality. The game’s story would have involved conflicts with the original Ku Klux Klan, which formed during the Reconstruction era in 1865.
Yasuke Backlash Reportedly Contributed to Anti-KKK Assassin’s Creed Game Cancellation
Sources say Ubisoft canceled the game for two main reasons. While some negative reaction to the Black samurai character in *Assassin’s Creed Shadows* played a small part, the bigger concern was the increasingly tense political situation in the United States. One source explained that Ubisoft considered the game “too political for a country that’s currently unstable.”
Too political in a country too unstable, to make it short.
The cancellation of the Assassin’s Creed game set in the Reconstruction era happened around the same time as the attempted assassination of then-President-elect Donald Trump. On July 13, 2024, Thomas Matthew Crooks, age 20, opened fire with a rifle at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania, killing one person before being shot by the Secret Service. Although news of the game’s cancellation within Ubisoft came after this incident, reports indicate the decision was made just prior. While some Ubisoft employees were upset, the Trump assassination attempt, along with the September 2025 assassination of far-right podcaster Charlie Kirk, highlight the political unrest that company leadership reportedly used as justification for canceling the game.
