Rumor Claims Steam Deck 2 May Not Arrive Until 2028

It’s rumored that Valve’s next Steam Deck may not be available until several years from now. According to a well-respected hardware leaker named KeplerL2 on the gaming forum NeoGAF, it appears the release of the Steam Deck 2 might be scheduled for the year 2028.

In the conversation regarding various portable computers, the remark failed to provide any further facts or proof to back up the stated date.

The projected release date of 2028 for the Steam Deck aligns with earlier predictions that the device would not become available for quite some time. Valve has made it clear they won’t launch a new version of the Steam Deck until significant advancements in performance and efficiency can be achieved. During the introduction of the Steam Deck OLED in November 2023, Valve designer Lawrence Yang referred to the device as the “definitive first-generation Deck.” At that time, he also expressed confidence that within two or three years, there would be enough technological progress to warrant a successor for the original Steam Deck. However, this is not definitively confirmed yet.

In January 2025, whispers circulated about a potential Steam Deck 2 powered by AMD’s Ryzen Z2 processor. However, these rumors were swiftly debunked by Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais who clearly stated that neither the first nor any future versions of the Steam Deck will utilize the Z2 processor, instead of saying “there is (not) and will be no Z2 Steam Deck.

Currently, Valve is still providing support for both the original Steam Deck and its OLED variant, even as rival companies like ASUS and Lenovo ramp up their efforts to compete in the handheld PC market.

There’s currently no confirmed timeline for the launch of a Steam Deck 2, despite some reports suggesting otherwise. Since the release date is yet to be officially confirmed, it’s advisable to approach such claims with caution, given that 2028 is more than two years from now.
