Rumor: Classic PS1 Game Leaked for Xbox

Highlights

  • Limited Run Games brings back classic PS1 game Tomba! with a Special Edition release on modern platforms like PS5, PC, and Switch.
  • Tomba! was first released as a PS1 exclusive in 1997.
  • ESRB rating hints at Xbox release for Tomba! Special Edition, but it hasn’t been officially announced yet.

As a longtime gamer with fond memories of playing classic PlayStation 1 games, I’m thrilled to hear that Tomba! is making a comeback on modern platforms. I remember spending countless hours exploring the world of Tomba and solving puzzles in this beloved side-scrolling platformer. The news that Limited Run Games is releasing a Special Edition of Tomba! for PS5, PC, Switch, and possibly Xbox is music to my ears.

It seems that the remake of the 1997 PlayStation 1 hit game “Tomba!” is reportedly making its way to Xbox in addition to previously announced platforms, based on a recent ESRB rating. Originally launched as an exclusive for PlayStation, this side-scrolling platformer stood out for its distinctive art design and Metroidvania game mechanics. Despite not being a commercial success at launch, the game’s popularity led to the development of a sequel named “Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return“.

I fondly recall playing Tomba on my trusty PlayStation 1 back in the day, but now it’s a bit of a challenge to get my hands on it again. For those without an original copy, they can still grab it on the PS3, yet currently, it’s not playable on contemporary systems. But fear not, fellow gamers! Come August 1, we’ll be able to revel in Tomba: Special Edition on our shiny new PlayStation 5 consoles, complete with enticing upgrades!

Besides PS5, Tomba: Special Edition is also coming to PC, PS4, and Switch, though a release date for those versions of the game has not been announced at the time of this writing. There’s been no mention of an Xbox port for Tomba: Special Edition, but the ESRB rating for the game has indicated that such a project may very well be in development. The ESRB has given the game an E10+ rating (the original was simply rated E for Everyone), while listing it as coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox Series consoles. If the Xbox version of Tomba: Special Edition does exist, hopefully Limited Run Games offers some clarification sooner rather than later.

Tomba: Special Edition Listed for Xbox

Enthusiasts looking forward to Tomba’s return on contemporary consoles should be aware that the sequel is also receiving the same treatment. Although a definite launch date hasn’t been disclosed yet, Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return will be available on all the same platforms as Tomba: Special Edition at some point in 2025. Given that Tomba: Special Edition is slated for Xbox release based on this ESRB rating, it’s reasonable to assume that the updated version of Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return will follow suit.

Limited Run Games has achieved significant success in reviving classic games from the past using its Carbon Engine. Among these, fans of platform games should not miss out on the re-release of Limited Run Games’ Gex Trilogy. This bundle will include all three PS1-era Gex games in one convenient package.
