It’s been hinted that Electronic Arts (EA) may transform Battlefield into an annual series like Call of Duty. But don’t expect a new Battlefield game each year just yet, as this plan seems to be still in the works.
Historically, the Battlefield series has been less prolific compared to many other major players in the First-Person Shooter (FPS) genre. In fact, it has become even more infrequent in recent years. If we look back at all the Battlefield games, there was a period during the late 2000s and early 2010s when the series experienced a lot of activity, but since then, the franchise has chosen to release new games less frequently. For instance, Battlefield 5 came out in 2016, followed by Battlefield 2042 in 2021, marking a three-year gap between the two. The four-year gap between Battlefield 2042 and the upcoming Battlefield 6 is the longest interval between mainline releases for this series since it began back in 2002.
EA Seemingly Wants To Make Battlefield Annually, But it Could Take “Five or Six Years”
As a gamer, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about my favorite series, Battlefield! According to Michael Pachter’s recent report on Insider Gaming, Electronic Arts (EA) is planning to release new installments of Battlefield annually, similar to the Call of Duty franchise.
Pachter claims he spoke with Battlefield’s General Manager, Byron Beede, who mentioned that they aim to have three studios working on Battlefield titles every three years, eventually leading up to an annual release schedule. However, it seems we won’t see two consecutive releases for at least five or six years. So, while we wait, let’s anticipate the upcoming Battlefield games!
An annual Battlefield event might initially seem promising, given the involvement of multiple studios. Yet, its long-term success isn’t guaranteed due to the common problem of franchise fatigue in gaming over time. While it’s possible for Battlefield to sustain an annual release, there is a risk associated with consistently offering similar content year after year.
Currently, numerous gamers are thrilled to have Battlefield back in the limelight, with Battlefield 6’s open beta suggesting a successful comeback. The beta has offered players a clearer picture of what the final game will be like, and while there have been some concerns about map sizes voiced by the community, overall, the feedback appears quite positive. This is particularly noteworthy when contrasted with the reception of Battlefield 2042 four years ago.
