The initial installment of the “Final Fantasy 7” remake trilogy first appeared on PlayStation 4 back in April 2020. A more advanced version titled “Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade” premiered on PlayStation 5 in June 2021, followed by its release on PC in December of the same year.

According to a reliable source known as NateTheHate, who shared this information during his podcast on January 10th, the highly praised JRPG that is currently in development for the Switch is also being planned for the upcoming Switch 2. Reportedly, the second installment of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy, titled “Rebirth,” will be playable on Nintendo’s future console as well.

FF7 Remake and Rebirth Are Also Reportedly Coming to Xbox

NateTheHate claims that the rumored Switch 2 versions of “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” and “Rebirth,” according to him, are part of Square Enix’s broader strategy for multi-platform game publishing, which they announced in May 2024. Besides the Switch 2, these games are also expected on Xbox Series X/S. The leaker suggests that “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” will appear on current-generation Xbox consoles in 2025, followed by “Rebirth” in 2026. However, NateTheHate did not provide specific release dates for the Switch 2 versions, though they might coincide with the timeline he provided for the Xbox releases. The possibility exists that the third game in the trilogy may also be released on multiple platforms, but it won’t be immediately after launch, as Sony already holds exclusive rights to all three games for a specific period of time.

The specific release dates for upcoming editions of “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” and “Rebirth” are yet to be clarified. It’s speculated that at least one might be announced during the 2025 Xbox Developer Direct, scheduled for January 23rd. However, ports for these games on the Switch 2 can’t be confirmed until Nintendo officially unveils their new console, which they’ve promised to do before the end of their fiscal year 2024, ending March 31st. Notably, while mainline “Final Fantasy” entries have often bypassed the Switch, Square Enix has continued to release games for this platform, with a total of 16 “Final Fantasy” titles available so far, ranging from “FF15 Pocket Edition HD” in September 2018 to the first six “FF” games in April 2023.
