As a long-time Marvel enthusiast who has spent countless hours poring over comic books and binge-watching superhero movies, I can’t help but feel my heart race with anticipation at the casting news for Thunderbolts*. Geraldine Viswanathan and Lewis Pullman joining the star-studded cast is nothing short of electrifying!

In the upcoming Marvel film, Thunderbolts, Geraldine Viswanathan’s character remains enigmatic. The only hint about her part is her name, “Mel,” leading fans to speculate about the character she might be playing.

As a long-time fan of Marvel movies, I was thrilled when I heard that the young Australian actress was cast in “Thunderbolts.” Having closely followed the development of this project, I was aware of Ayo Edebiri’s departure due to scheduling conflicts. The delay caused by the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strike last year only added to the anticipation.

Marvel Entertainment released a video featuring the cast of the Thunderbolts at San Diego Comic-Con during the weekend. In this video, Viswanathan was seen alongside Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lewis Pullman, who portray Valentina Allegra de Fontaine and “Bob” respectively. There are rumors that Viswanathan’s character is Melissa Gold, also known as Songbird, due to her role in the video. Songbird has supersonic sound abilities and was initially a supervillain named Screaming Mimi in Marvel Two-in-One #54 from 1979, according to ComicBookMovie.com. Mark Gruenwald, Ralph Macchio, and John Byrne created the character, who later became known as Songbird after joining Thunderbolts. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Viswanathan provided more information about her character, stating that Mel is closely connected to Valentina, implying that she aligns with the antagonist. She mentioned, “I’m almost like her right-hand man, questioning who she is and what she’s doing. So we have a strong partnership, which is exciting – it’s Julia Louis Dreyfus!”

Apart from the discussions surrounding Viswanathan’s character, it appears that Pullman’s character being named Bob lends credence to the whispers suggesting he will portray Robert “Bob” Reynolds, aka Sentry, the superhero known for his powers of a million exploding suns. Earlier, there were rumors about Yeun taking on this role. Although Marvel Studios never confirmed Yeun’s casting, he himself admitted in an interview that he was initially involved with the project before leaving it. Pullman addressed these rumors by stating that Bob wasn’t his character’s full name, saying, “Everyone has their own nicknames, and Bob isn’t his only name.” To strengthen this claim, Pullman mentioned that he recently dined with his father who called him Magoo, Lew Magoo. He further emphasized, “Bob is not the only name he goes by,” hinting at more details to come regarding his character in the upcoming Thunderbolts film.

It’s speculated that the rumors about Viswanathan and Pullman’s characters could be accurate, but it’s best to approach this with caution until Marvel officially confirms it. In the scenario where Viswanathan is indeed part of the series, she might embody Screaming Mimi, a character who was initially a member of the criminal groups known as the Grapplers and the Masters of Evil. The actress has confirmed that she played Valentina’s right hand. However, Screaming Mimi eventually reformed and became Songbird, a part of the initial Thunderbolts team.

Thunderbolts* will hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
