As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I have to admit that the constant changes surrounding Avengers 5 have left me feeling a bit disheartened. I was excited about the prospect of Michael Waldron, who created Loki and wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, bringing his unique vision to the upcoming film. But now, with him reportedly leaving the project and rumors swirling about major plot changes, it feels like we’re playing a never-ending game of musical chairs.

The upcoming Avengers 5 movie from Marvel is generating significant excitement and we’re just under a year away from production beginning. However, there are still several key roles that need to be cast, with recent reports suggesting that screenwriter Michael Waldron may have departed the project.

As a huge fan of Waldron’s work, I can tell you that he has made significant contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He created “Loki” and served as its head writer during the first season. Moreover, he penned “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.” So, it came as no shock when he was tapped to write both “Avengers 5” and “Avengers 6,” namely “Avengers: Secret Wars.” However, there have been some major shifts in the development of these projects. For instance, Destin Daniel Cretton had originally been set to direct, but he stepped down. Jeff Loveness was also attached as a writer, but he’s no longer involved. And unfortunately, Jonathan Majors, who was expected to portray the main antagonist, faced allegations of reckless assault and harassment, leading to his departure from the project.

Based on information from reliable sources, Waldron is reportedly no longer involved in “Avengers 5” production. This news emerged nearly a year before filming is scheduled to begin in late March 2025 and last until August. The reason behind his departure remains undisclosed, but given that he had been working on the project’s storyline for some time, it’s possible he had completed or was nearing completion of his draft.

As an avid fan, I’ve heard whispers that Waldron’s departure from “Avengers 5” was linked to Marvel’s decision to alter the storyline following the dismissal of Majors, who was originally set to star as Kang the Conqueror. The MCU dropped a significant hint when they changed the title back from “The Kang Dynasty” to “Avengers 5” earlier this year. With Majors’ controversy, there were rumors that Marvel might recast the role or even abandon the Kang-centric plot. Some fans speculated that Doctor Doom could be a potential replacement. However, it seems Marvel is opting for the latter choice – revising the plot instead of recasting Majors’ character.

Marvel appears to be altering the storyline for “Avengers 5,” leading to Waldron’s replacement having to modify and adjust the original script significantly. However, this isn’t an unprecedented move for Marvel Studios. In the past, they have brought on new writers to revise scripts within tight deadlines. For instance, Waldron was hired in 2020 to rework the script for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” after Scott Derrickson left due to creative differences. Sam Raimi, director of the “Spider-Man” trilogy starring Tobey Maguire, took over and collaborated with Waldron on reshaping the script shortly before production was slated to begin. The upcoming “Avengers 5” screenwriter has more time on their hands since filming is not yet scheduled to start.

Currently, there are whispers that Shawn Levy, known for directing “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” is being considered for the director’s role in “Avengers 5.” The offer was supposedly extended to him earlier this year, but he had to pass due to scheduling conflicts. Nevertheless, the opportunity apparently stayed open, and with the promising advance ticket sales for “Deadpool” and “Wolverine,” Levy would be a secure pick to lead the film.

Avengers 5 is currently set for release on May 1, 2026.
