Rumor: More PlayStation Games Are Coming to Xbox

It’s rumored that Sony could be planning to make more PlayStation games playable on Xbox platforms, as suggested by a trusted source. Currently, only Helldivers 2 has been confirmed for release on Xbox, but this news might hint at a potential shift in how Sony handles exclusivity in the future.

As a dedicated PlayStation gamer, I’ve always appreciated how Sony has guarded their exclusive games like precious treasures, with legendary series such as God of War, Uncharted, Horizon, The Last of Us, and others being nearly unattainable on any platform other than PlayStation for much of their existence. But lately, there seems to be a thaw in Sony’s stance, starting with the introduction of PC versions of selected first-party games last year, and most recently, the shocking revelation that Helldivers 2 will debut on Xbox Series X/S on August 26. This unexpected move has sparked buzz about a potential seismic shift in Sony’s exclusivity policy.

A recent job posting from Sony suggests they may release more games on multiple platforms, sparking further discussions about their future plans. Industry insider NateTheHate has added his thoughts on whether Sony will continue to make PlayStation games available on Xbox. On Twitter, when asked if we can expect more PlayStation games on Xbox, NateTheHate simply replied: “Yes, there will be more Sony games on Xbox.” However, he clarified that he doesn’t have a list of confirmed multiplatform titles from PlayStation, but hinted that it might not extend beyond live-service games.

If Sony Does Port More PlayStation Games to Xbox, They May Not Be of the Single-Player Variety

One key factor contributing to the triumph of live-service games is their substantial playerbase, and so far, Sony has had limited success in this specific genre, with only a handful of exceptions like “Helldivers 2”. Most PlayStation first-party live-service games have either failed or been quietly closed, leaving room for improvement. Interestingly, Sony has plans to unveil live-service games on both PC and PS5 at the same time, which could hint at a possible future appearance on Xbox as well – possibly following a one-year exclusivity period post-launch. Consequently, anticipated PlayStation live-service titles such as “Fairgames” and the cooperative “Horizon” game may also find their way onto Xbox.

While it’s not unprecedented for a PlayStation game to appear on Xbox, the case of Helldivers 2 is different. Unlike annual entries of MLB The Show, which have been moving to Xbox since 2021 due to contractual obligations from MLB, the decision for Helldivers 2 to come to Series X/S was entirely voluntary and not influenced by any external entity. It remains unclear how extensively Sony will continue to release multiplatform PlayStation games in the future, but it appears they may be more open to catering to Xbox players moving forward.
