Rumors are circulating about a potential new level of Xbox Game Pass. This tier appears to offer a collection of older games from studios owned by Microsoft. Xbox has been heavily investing in Game Pass throughout this console generation, releasing all its own games on the service as soon as they launch. To attract even more subscribers and expand the service, Xbox has introduced different subscription options, each giving access to a unique selection of games.
Xbox Game Pass subscriptions have become more expensive, sparking debate among players. The price of the Ultimate plan increased by $10 last October, reaching $29.99, which upset many subscribers and made them question the service’s value. While Game Pass Ultimate can still be a good deal for those who play new games as soon as they’re released, $29.99 is about half the price of a brand-new video game. Some players are hesitant to pay that much, particularly with other entertainment choices available.
Xbox Game Pass TRITON Tier
A new rumor suggests Microsoft is working on another Xbox Game Pass tier, currently known as TRITON. A Twitter user, Better xCloud, found code referencing this name alongside a list of older games published by Microsoft studios, including titles like DOOM Eternal, Ori and the Blind Forest, and Halo 5: Guardians. While Microsoft hasn’t officially confirmed this new tier, it aligns with recent statements from Asha Sharma, who is exploring more affordable Game Pass options. A tier focused on older games could be attractive to players and would be less expensive for Xbox, as they wouldn’t need to pay licensing fees to other game companies.
There’s been a lot of talk about whether Xbox Game Pass will be available on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Expanding Game Pass to these platforms would allow Xbox to gain many more subscribers, which is a key goal for the company. However, Nintendo and Sony might not want to allow it, primarily because they currently earn a significant profit from each third-party game sold on their consoles. Game Pass could reduce those sales – for instance, popular games like Among Us and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge might see fewer individual purchases on Switch if players could access them through a Game Pass subscription. With Microsoft’s new TRITON service appearing to focus only on games Microsoft owns, people are now questioning if this is the type of Game Pass version that could potentially launch on Sony and Nintendo consoles.
Asha Sharma has just started as the new head of Xbox, so it’s too early to know what her leadership will mean for the brand. The recent “This is an Xbox” ad campaign seems to have been dropped, and we can expect more changes in the coming months. Xbox has faced challenges during this console generation, leaving fans understandably worried about what’s next. However, there’s hope for improvement – offering cheaper Game Pass options would be a great first step, particularly if the TRITON service becomes available on more than just Xbox. For now, those wanting to try Xbox Game Pass will have to stick with the current subscription plans.
