There’s been a buzz on social media suggesting that a new installment of the popular game series, “Xenoblade Chronicles,” might be underway exclusively for the newly launched Nintendo Switch 2. Given the recent release of “Xenoblade Chronicles 3” in 2022 and the more recent update of “Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition,” fans are eagerly anticipating another game, hoping for enhanced graphics and performance on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Originally launched for the Wii in Japan (2010) and North America (2012), the initial Xenoblade Chronicles gained significant influence within Nintendo’s RPG library, combining sci-fi and fantasy elements within an expansive open world using a real-time action combat system. Two subsequent installments, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (released in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch) and Xenoblad Chronicles 3 (launched in 2022), followed suit. With the arrival of the Switch 2, devotees of the series are anxiously awaiting updates on its future, and a recent speculation hints that we might not just be dreaming about Xenoblade Chronicles 4.
On Twitter, Manami Kiyota, the composer known for the Xenoblade series, revealed she’s busy with a new, unspecified project. With her work history limited primarily to Xenoblade and a few other titles like Smash Ultimate (2018) and PokePark Wii (2009), it’s hard to predict the nature of this mystery project. Notably, the studio responsible for the Xenoblade RPG series has already dabbled with Nintendo’s latest console, as they contributed to Mario Kart World’s development. Moreover, series creator Tetsuya Takahashi expressed in a 2022 interview that if another Xenoblade installment were made, he’d aim for it to be significantly distinct from previous entries.

It’s interesting to note that Xenoblade Chronicles nearly missed out on a North American release, as suggested by former Nintendo employees. The game garnered immense popularity in Japan following its 2010 debut, leading numerous online petitions for a Western launch. A European release occurred a year later, but it wasn’t until 2012 that the action RPG made its way to North America. The positive response it received paved the path for subsequent games in the series to be released more promptly in other regions.
Enthusiasts are eagerly awaiting an official announcement about a potential new Xenoblade Chronicles game during the rumored July 2025 Nintendo Direct broadcast. Although the event hasn’t been officially confirmed yet, industry insiders suggest it will take place on Thursday, July 31. With the Switch 2 having launched with limited first-party games, gamers are eager to learn about any upcoming projects from the company for the remainder of 2025 and beyond.
