Rumor: Next Xbox Could Be More Powerful Than the PS6

Fresh information emerges about the anticipated next-generation versions of the PlayStation and Xbox consoles, including rumors suggesting that Microsoft might hold a slight lead in terms of raw power. However, this supposed advantage seems to be overshadowed by a more complex scenario, as both upcoming PlayStation and Xbox systems are said to boast unique strengths.

Over the last year, there’s been a lot of talk about the upcoming generation of console hardware, as the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 have been on the market for almost five years now. Microsoft is reportedly developing their next-gen Xbox console, codenamed “Magnus,” which they claim will offer a significant boost in performance. On the other hand, Sony has been relatively quiet, only revealing late last year that they are collaborating with AMD on Project Amethyst, focusing on enhancing machine learning technology and neural networks for future gaming hardware, set to launch in late 2024.

PS6 and Next-Gen Xbox May Feature a Similar Performance Delta to the PS5 and Xbox Series X

As a hardcore gamer, I’ve been keeping my eyes peeled for any updates on the upcoming PS6 and next-gen Xbox. Lately, there’s been a flurry of leaks and rumors floating around, and I just stumbled upon one more. On NeoGAF, a well-respected industry insider named KeplerL2 dropped some interesting info. According to them, the PS6 might pack a punch comparable to the AMD RX 9070 XT graphics card, while the next Xbox could be on par with the NVIDIA RTX 5080.

Now, direct comparisons between Nvidia and AMD architectures are tricky, but real-world benchmarks suggest that the next Xbox might have about a 20% edge over the PS6 when it comes to raw power. This mirrors the performance gap we’ve seen between the PS5 and Xbox Series X so far. So, fellow gamers, buckle up! The next-gen console war is heating up, and I can’t wait to see what these giants have in store for us.

As a gamer, I’m excited about the rumors surrounding the PS6. KeplerL2 hinted that it could outshine the next-gen Xbox with advanced GPU capabilities like Dense Geometry Format for Unreal Engine 5’s Nanite rendering, Streaming Wave Coalescer, Workgroup Self-Launch, and improved ray tracing. These features are said to be part of AMD’s future RDNA 5 architecture, nicknamed “UDNA,” which is expected to bring a major architectural shift since the GCN architecture back in 2012, powering the GPUs of the PS4 and Xbox One. It’s plausible that the inclusion of these features in the PS6 could be due to Project Amethyst.

The upcoming Xbox, though it may not offer all the advanced graphical features, could still pose a significant challenge to the PS6 due to its alleged superior processing power. On the other hand, rumors suggest that the next Xbox might transition to a Windows-based system instead of using a specialized operating system, transforming it into a powerful PC-like console with access to multiple digital marketplaces. In contrast, Sony’s approach for the PS6 seems more conventional, and there’s growing speculation that they will introduce a new-generation handheld device with PS5-level performance alongside the console.
