The Epic Games Store is bringing back its annual December tradition of giving away a free game each day. Rumors about this year’s offerings are already circulating online. Unlike their typical free game releases which happen weekly, December features a new free game every single day.
Epic Games Store’s free mystery game promotion kicked off on December 11th with the popular game Hogwarts Legacy available to download for free. Hogwarts Legacy, a massive open-world Harry Potter RPG, was the best-selling game of 2023 and one of the most popular free games ever offered on the Epic Games Store. Players can claim their free copy until Thursday, December 18th at 10:00am CST, when it will be replaced with a new mystery game, likely starting a series of daily free games.
While Epic Games hasn’t officially announced the next free mystery game, a potential list is circulating online, reportedly from Chinese social media. Most likely, it’s a fake, as these lists often are. However, past free games have usually been leaked beforehand, so there’s a small possibility this one is real. We’ll know for sure when the game is released on December 18th, but fans are free to check out the list and decide for themselves what they think.

If the recent leak is accurate, players can expect a variety of games to be offered soon, starting with Hogwarts Legacy and followed by Jurassic World Evolution 2 on December 18th. The list also includes Desperados 3, Total War: Warhammer, Tropico 5, Chicken Police: Paint It Red, Loop Hero, LEGO Batman, Commander Keen, Farming Simulator 2022, Slime Rancher 2, Terraria, Detroit: Become Human, Mortal Kombat 11, and Red Dead Redemption 2 to finish out the year. This mix of popular, high-profile games and smaller titles is similar to past promotions, but some aspects of the leaked list are concerning.
It seems surprising that Red Dead Redemption 2 is available for free on the Epic Games Store, but Rockstar Games has offered free games there before – the most famous instance being Grand Theft Auto 5.
The biggest clue that this list is fake is that several of the games aren’t currently on the Epic Games Store. While it’s possible these games could become free offerings in the future – Epic has done that before – it seems unlikely. Traditionally, Epic gives away a major title on Christmas Day, so it wouldn’t make sense for them to release games like Mortal Kombat 11 and Red Dead Redemption 2 later in the month and offer Commander Keen on the 25th.
The Epic Games Store has run a promotion giving away free games each year, and a recent leak claimed it would continue through 2026. However, the absence of any games listed for 2026 suggests the leak is likely false. It’s worth noting that accurate leaks have occurred in the past, so it’s not a complete dismissal. We won’t have to wait long to find out for sure. If the free game offered on December 18th turns out to be Jurassic World Evolution 2, the rest of the leaked list will seem much more believable. Otherwise, fans can safely assume the leak is a fake.
