A fresh game in the series known as “The Crew” has reportedly been given the go-ahead at Ubisoft, according to a trusted industry source. This unconfirmed project is said to be the fourth primary installment in Ubisoft’s open-world racing franchise and will supposedly revert back to its original gameplay style.
The Ubisoft Ivory Tower studio, established in Lyon back in 2007, has dedicated its entire attention to the development of the “The Crew” series. After debuting the first installment in 2014, they released “The Crew 2” and “The Crew Motorfest” in 2018 and 2023 respectively.
According to Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming, it seems that the next installment of the well-known racing series is in development. He mentioned that there has reportedly been approval for this upcoming game, although the exact date of this approval is yet to be specified. It’s suggested that this approval took place recently. Henderson, who is known for his reliable Ubisoft news leaks, later clarified that this new project is actually a sequel to The Crew 2, not a follow-up to The Crew Motorfest.
The Crew Motorfest Is a Significantly Different Game Than Its Predecessors
In contrast to the first two games that featured miniaturized versions of the U.S., the third installment of The Crew series adopted a compact open-world design centered around O’ahu, an island in Hawaii. This tropical backdrop, combined with event-based gameplay and a festival motif, makes The Crew Motorfest more similar to Forza Horizon than its earlier versions.
Next The Crew Game May Be Called The Crew 3
Based on Henderson’s report indicating a possible return to the exploratory gameplay style of Ubisoft Ivory Tower’s earlier games, the upcoming title could possibly revert back to the numbered naming system, potentially being titled as “The Crew 3“. Although the Lyon studio might be working on another project, it’s unlikely that updates for “The Crew Motorfest” will cease anytime soon. The latest installment surpassed its predecessor’s sales records early on and currently boasts at least tens of thousands of active users each month, as suggested by public data displayed within the game via Summits and custom Car Shows.
Given that the fourth version is currently in the pre-production phase, it seems highly unlikely for its release to occur before the commencement of the next console generation, estimated to be around late 2027. Contemporary game development cycles have significantly expanded in length, with most major productions averaging at least five years. Consequently, a 2030 launch does not preclude the possibility that the fourth installment of The Crew could still be a cross-generation title, similar to The Crew Motorfest.
