The PlayStation Portal, launched in 2023, has become a popular addition for PS5 owners. It lets you stream your PS5 games or other content using Remote Play, and features an 8-inch HD screen along with controls similar to the DualSense controller. Roughly 5% of PS5 owners in the United States have purchased a PlayStation Portal, indicating it was generally well-received.
Rumored Update Could Allow PS Portal to Stream Games Without Turning On PS5
Recently, a rumor started circulating online after fans noticed text on some PlayStation Store pages suggesting players might be able to stream and instantly play pre-ordered or purchased games on their PS Portal or PS5 with a PS Plus Premium subscription. This has led to speculation that Sony is planning an update that would allow direct game streaming to the PS Portal, meaning players could enjoy PlayStation 5 games without even needing to turn on their console. While this would be a significant benefit for PS Portal owners, it’s currently just a rumor and shouldn’t be considered confirmed.
Although it’s too soon to say for sure, Sony has released several updates for the PS Portal this year. For instance, an update in April added features like better ways to organize games and the ability to easily capture gameplay footage, making the handheld device more user-friendly.
Honestly, the PlayStation Portal really surprised me. Everyone thought the $200 price was steep, and even Sony said it sold better than they expected! If those rumors about an updated version are true, I think it could be a huge win for them.
