It’s confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. has returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are whispers that he might first appear as a villain in an upcoming superhero film before the release of what we know as “Avengers 5.”
Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Dr. Victor von Doom (also known as Doctor Doom) was officially confirmed at the San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. He is set to appear as the villain in both “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.” However, this casting choice has sparked some debate. While many are thrilled that Downey Jr. is rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, others are skeptical due to his return as one of the antagonists, a stark (pun intended) shift from his beloved character, Tony Stark, aka Iron Man. A source hinted that we might see Downey Jr. embodying Doctor Doom in another Marvel film slated for release next year.
Jeff Sneider, a renowned entertainment journalist and source, provided more information on RDJ’s return to the MCU. He hinted that there was a significant detail missing from the major announcement – the exact moment when RDJ will introduce his supervillain character. According to Sneider, Downey Jr. is expected to debut as Doctor Doom in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In his post on The InSneider, he mentioned that while they omitted the part about the character’s initial appearance being revealed in a mid/post-credits scene at the end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, that’s not the main point. The main point is that Robert Downey Jr. is coming back! He referred to Downey Jr. as the “true Marvel savior”!
Based on Sneider’s account, he was aware of the whispers about Robert Downey Jr.’s casting prior to a major announcement. However, he had a planned lunch meeting with Marvel and Disney executives set for May 21st, so he chose to hold off on questioning the rumor to secure a face-to-face discussion. Unfortunately, this meeting was canceled and not rescheduled, leaving him no other option than to contact Marvel. It’s said that Downey Jr. had a good rapport with the studio, but they denied any involvement in this matter. Given their past track record of preventing him from being embarrassed, he accepted their denial.
Snedier is known as one of the reliable sources within Marvel Studios. A few weeks ago, he revealed that the Russo brothers would be coming back to direct the upcoming Avengers films. He also suggested that either Stephen McFeely or Christopher Markus, one of the writing partners, would return to write Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 (Avengers 6). During the Comic-Con panel, Marvel officially announced the Russo Brothers’ return, and their production company AGBO subsequently released a press statement confirming that McFeely was set to write Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars. This implies that there is a possibility that Robert Downey Jr. might make his first appearance as Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movie.
The character Doctor Doom, co-created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, debuted in Fantastic Four #5. Given this, it’s reasonable to expect his appearance in the upcoming film, The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Previously, it was mentioned that Galactus would serve as the primary antagonist, but Doctor Doom is slated to make an appearance in the movie. Marvel often introduces characters with brief appearances or post-credit scenes before they have larger roles in subsequent films. For example, Jeremy Renner made an unaccredited cameo in Chris Hemsworth’s Thor (2011), and later appeared as Hawkeye in The Avengers (2012). Therefore, it’s quite possible that fans will catch Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four and see more of him in Avengers: Doomsday.
