Players who enjoy survival games might be excited to hear that details about a potential Rust 2 have recently appeared online. It’s unclear if this leak is genuine, or if it’s a marketing trick, or even connected to the original Rust game at all. However, given how popular Rust is and how long it’s been since its release, it’s reasonable to think that the game’s developer, Facepunch Studios, could be working on a sequel or new project.
Originally launched in December 2013 as an early access title, Rust challenges players to explore a vast open world and gather resources. It’s best known for how players interact – sometimes with funny moments, but often with conflict. After many updates and additions since its release, the developers at Facepunch Studios probably have plenty of ideas for a possible sequel.
Rust 2 Might Be on the Way
Rumors of a Rust 2 are gaining traction after images of its Steam page appeared on Reddit. Currently, the page only shows the game’s name and indicates it will be free-to-play, with no other details available. While the page is still accessible through a direct link, it isn’t listed publicly on Steam and won’t show up in searches. SteamDB has flagged the listing as potentially suspicious, suggesting it could be harmful or falsely represent another game.
The store page caused a lot of buzz on Reddit. More significantly, Alistair McFarlane, the COO of Facepunch Games (known as Alistair_Mc on Reddit), simply commented, “You saw nothing.” Interestingly, the Reddit account that first shared the image was brand new. Many fans believe this, combined with McFarlane’s comment, suggests this could be a planned marketing campaign.
McFarlane also mentioned he frequently checks the subreddit and has noticed some posts are causing confusion among fans. He playfully added, “Now you’re all wondering if this is actually happening?” While this doesn’t offer any concrete answers, it’s a clear attempt to build anticipation for a possible announcement soon. With Summer Game Fest happening in June, it’s likely the developer wants to generate buzz if they plan to reveal more at that event.

I remember back in 2023, when Unity announced those big changes to how much developers would have to pay, Garry Newman from Facepunch basically said they wouldn’t make Rust 2 using Unity because of the increased costs. Unity walked that back later, but we haven’t really heard anything about Rust 2 since then. It’s made it hard to know if they were even still planning on making a sequel!
Good news might be coming for fans soon! If a new Rust game is released, it’s likely to be very popular. Rust continues to be a hit on Steam, with around 150,000 people playing at the same time. This consistently ranks it among Steam’s ten most-played games, and often puts it in the top five.
