Rumor: Skull and Bones Planning Year 2 Content Despite Low Player Numbers

Summary

  • Ubisoft reportedly planning Year 2 content for Skull and Bones.
  • Skull and Bones only has roughly 200 concurrent players on Steam, but a new report claims the game’s player count “might surprise people.”
  • Year 2 Season 1 supposedly planned for early 2025 with new PvP modes, locations, world tiers, and more.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I was initially skeptical when I heard about Ubisoft planning Year 2 content for Skull and Bones. After all, the game’s player count on Steam is alarmingly low, and its reception has been less than stellar. However, the industry insider’s claim that the player numbers “might surprise people” piqued my curiosity.

A knowledgeable source within the gaming industry hints that Ubisoft intends to roll out fresh Year 2 content for the game “Skull and Bones,” even though it has a relatively small player base on certain platforms. Launched in February 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, this long-anticipated action-adventure title, however, received less than stellar reviews due to its subpar reception. Considering Ubisoft’s challenging year, many had assumed that the new content updates for “Skull and Bones” would conclude after its first year.

2025 might bring significant transformations for Ubisoft, given the predictions, but the company experienced a rocky year in 2024. The underwhelming reception of their anticipated title, Star Wars Outlaws, led to a 10% decrease in the company’s stock price and brought them close to hitting a 10-year low for the studio. This hardship was preceded by several rounds of layoffs, which unfortunately is a trend seen across major gaming studios like Activision-Blizzard, Sony, Riot Games, and others, who resorted to job cuts in order to maintain their financial stability during 2024.

Skull and Bones Reportedly Planning Year 2 Updates

Even though I’ve noticed that many gamers aren’t too thrilled about Skull and Bones based on the low user reviews, it seems like Ubisoft is determined to keep this game alive for another year. As per a recent report from Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming, they claim to have inside info about the studio’s plans. They say that we can expect a Year 2 Season 1 update coming “early next year,” packed with new PvP modes, locations, world tiers, and other exciting additions. Just a few weeks ago, Skull and Bones rolled out its latest content update, known as Year 1 Season 4: Shadows of the Deep, which brought in new world events, sea monsters, features, and more.

Initially released on Steam in August, the game titled “Skull and Bones” may have had a relatively small peak player count of 2,615 (according to SteamDB), but Insider Gaming’s source claims that its actual player numbers could be surprising, which might explain Ubisoft’s continued dedication to producing fresh content for another year. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to ascertain the game’s player numbers on other platforms like PlayStation and Xbox, but “Skull and Bones” typically averages around 200 simultaneous players on Steam.

It might shock a lot of people that the game “Skull and Bones” is said to be getting another year’s worth of content updates, given that Ubisoft has announced they are closing down “XDefiant”. This game was highly anticipated by first-person shooter enthusiasts as it was supposed to compete with Activision’s hit game “Call of Duty”. However, the servers for “XDefiant” will stay active until June 3, 2025. Unfortunately, no new downloads or registrations are being accepted anymore since the game seems not to have gained enough popularity to warrant more updates and support. It was only launched in May this year.
