Rumor: The OG Persona Games Could Be Making a Comeback

Fans of the Persona series are starting to believe that remasters or remakes of the original games—even up to the third—might be announced soon. This hope is fueled by new merchandise releases that suggest bigger plans are in the works. While Persona didn’t become popular in the West until later in the series, many players are eager to experience the games that started it all.

As a huge fan, I’ve always loved how the Persona series started as a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei RPGs. What really grabs me is that you play as normal high school students in Japan who can summon these powerful beings called Personas – they’re basically manifestations of their inner selves, taking the form of legendary figures with magical abilities! It’s a fantastic blend of battling through dungeons and managing everyday life – school, friends, all of it. The series has been amazing since it began in 1996, though I know a lot of newer fans, myself included at first, jumped in with Persona 3 because the older games weren’t as easy to find or were a bit dated.

Persona Clothing Line May Be Hinting at New Remasters

As a long-time Persona fan, I’m really hoping we’ll see remasters or remakes soon, and there’s a lot of buzz going around about why that might happen! They just released a bunch of 30th-anniversary merch – shirts, mugs, hats, the works – on Amazon with art from all five games. What’s got everyone excited is how they’re labeling the older game merch. Instead of using the original titles like Revelations: Persona, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, and Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, they’re calling them “Persona 1 Origins” and “Persona 2 Duality.” It’s a small thing, but people think these new names hint that Atlus is planning to revisit and potentially remake those earlier titles, especially since Persona 2 was originally released as two separate games back in 1999 and 2000.

Although Atlus and P-Studio haven’t officially announced any remakes or remasters, fans suspect they might be in development. Following the huge popularity of Persona 5 in 2016, several spin-off games were released, exploring genres like rhythm (Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight), tactical RPG (Persona 5 Tactica), and action-RPG (Persona 5 Strikers). At the same time, the publisher also updated older titles for modern audiences, releasing ports of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden, and most recently, the Persona 3 Reload remake in 2024.

Bringing the earlier Persona games to a wider audience has been discussed at Atlus and P-Studio for a few years now. Kazuhisa Wada, a producer on the series, mentioned in September 2024 that he’d like to remake Persona 1 and 2 eventually, but those projects weren’t his current priority.

The new clothing line has sparked some curiosity, but fans shouldn’t get too excited about older Persona games being remastered or remade until an official announcement is made. What’s confirmed is the upcoming release of Persona 4 Revival, a complete remake of the game set in the town of Inaba and revolving around the mysterious Midnight Channel. It was first revealed in June 2025, and we’re still waiting for a specific release date.
