Xbox consoles may become more expensive in the near future. Prices have already increased twice this year because of tariffs, and another price hike is possible due to a shortage and rising costs of a key component called DRAM memory, which is impacting the whole tech world.
Starting in the latter part of 2025, the cost of DRAM memory has sharply increased, making it difficult for consumers to afford the RAM they need. This is largely due to high demand from companies like OpenAI that build artificial intelligence systems. These companies are getting priority access to the available supply, causing manufacturers to focus on building RAM for AI servers instead of consumer products. Because of this, the price of DDR5 memory kits for desktop computers has more than doubled since the fall. While there have been some discounts on other computer parts, there’s no indication that RAM prices – for either DDR4 or DDR5 – will come down anytime soon.
Xbox Console Prices Could Spike Due To Ongoing RAM Shortage
Despite being unconfirmed, reports suggest Xbox is being affected by rising RAM costs. According to industry insider Moore’s Law Is Dead, Microsoft wasn’t prepared for the RAM shortage, potentially leading to another price increase for Xbox consoles. While the exact timing and amount of any price change are unknown, Xbox Series X/S prices have already increased twice in 2025 due to US government tariffs. Currently, the Xbox Series S costs around $379.99, and the Xbox Series X is priced at $599.99. These price increases for both consoles and Xbox Game Pass have been met with criticism within the gaming community.
According to Moore’s Law Is Dead, the PlayStation 5 likely won’t see a price increase right away. Sony appears to have enough memory to satisfy customers during the busy holiday season, and PS5s are already being discounted by up to $100 for Black Friday. It’s unclear whether Sony will raise prices in the future.
Xbox has Black Friday discounts on games such as Fallout 76 and The Outer Worlds 2, but unfortunately, the Xbox Series X and S consoles themselves aren’t on sale. It’s unclear what Microsoft will do with its remaining console inventory, so we’ll have to wait and see.
