Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma: How To Befriend The Cursed Tree

In the game “Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma“, it’s possible to befriend most creatures you encounter, including the formidable boss monsters as well.

From my perspective, I find that the most approachable boss monster is the enchanted “Cursed Tree.” Nestled within the Guardian Grove of the Spring Region, this boss’s relatively low level and an effortlessly obtainable bonus item make it simple to incorporate the Cursed Tree into your team.

Despite being a Level 15 Cursed Tree, characters in Guardians of Azuma can level up rapidly. Take it on your adventures for a few days, and you’ll find that the tree will easily match your party’s level.

This ex-enemy, boasting potent long-range attacks and an Area of Effect (AOE) tied to Wind, makes a valuable newcomer. Despite the Cursed Tree primarily functioning as an Attacker in your party, its health reserves are substantial enough that it won’t succumb quickly.

Unlock Monster Taming

To start your friendship with the Cursed Tree, it’s essential to first learn how to subdue monsters. This is a well-known aspect of the Rune Factory series, which becomes accessible once you bring Kurama, the God of Autumn, back to life.

After you start restoring Autumn Village, the little tanuki named Kotaro requests your assistance in making friends with a Buffamoo. This empowers you to employ the Plum Branch to execute the Dance of Friendship on monsters.

Taming Requirements

If you’ve danced with the Bond Dance successfully, a tiny smiley-face symbol will appear above the monster, indicating that it can now be defeated. After defeating it, you have an opportunity to attempt friendship by offering gifts. These gifts don’t necessarily need to be in your inventory; they could also come from your storage or construction items.

In this scenario, monstrous characters show appreciation for liked presents by displaying a heart symbol, while expressing disdain for unwanted gifts with a skull image. Attempt to offer a gift on three separate occasions. It’s important to note that just because a monster enjoys the present you’ve given, it doesn’t guarantee that befriending them will ultimately succeed.

In the game “Guardians of Azuma,” there isn’t much detail about how you tame monsters. Typically, your chances seem to be based on the level gap between you (or your team) and the monster. I’ve never managed to tame a more powerful monster myself.

Building Materials Storage Units
Barn 35 Lumber, 15 Stone 4
Large Barn 100 Lumber, 40 Stone 8

In a barn, small creatures (such as a Wooly) occupy a single space, whereas larger ones need more room. Yet, feel free to adjust the arrangement of these creatures within your barns anytime you desire, using the Villagers interface.

Replacing Bulbasaur

To include Ivysaur, Bulbasaur’s towering, short-tempered relative, in your team, here’s what you’ll require:

  • Four open slots (filling an ordinary Barn)
  • A Wind Crystal

At this stage of the game, you should have surpassed the level of the Haunted Tree long ago. It’s unlikely to pose any difficulties if you aim to make friends with it.

It’s quite possible that you’ve got a Wind Crystal in your Storage Box which you haven’t used yet. If not, perhaps you sold it. In any case, Wind Crystals can be obtained from Lantern enemies or directly from the Cursed Tree itself. If you don’t have one, defeat the boss and return tomorrow to make friends with it.

Alternatively, you can buy one from Hisui’s shop in Summer Village for an onerous 10,000 gold.

Now, let’s give it another go! Make your way to the Dragon Statue situated beyond the Guardian Grove, ascend to the floating purple orb, and rekindle the battle. Wave the Plum Branch until you spot the smiley-face symbol, then fell that tree with a swift chop.

As the game progresses, you’ll face an alternate version of the boss. Additionally, you have the opportunity to establish a bond with the Corpse Tree using a Wind Crystal.

After cutting down the Cursed Tree, place the Wind Crystal upon it and transfer it to a different barn as its new dwelling. Should friendship attempts prove unsuccessful, you may need to revisit this procedure on a subsequent game day.

You can repeatedly take on the game’s strongest monsters as often as you like, and there’s no cap on the number of Cursed Trees you can domesticate.
