Summary
- Sinners will have a re-release on IMAX 70mm due to overwhelming demand.
- Word-of-mouth and quality play a huge role in the success of Sinners.
- Despite only showing in 9 theaters, Sinners’ success indicates a potential $230 million domestic finish.
The buzz surrounding Ryan Coogler’s film, “Sinners,” appears to be growing stronger by the day, whether it’s through box office sales or critical acclaim. Now, the movie is gearing up to answer the call of IMAX once more.
In the 1930s American South, the chilling vampire-horror-thriller “Sinners” unfolds. The story revolves around the twin brothers Smoke and Stack (portrayed by Michael B. Jordan), who return home to establish a juke joint. However, their peaceful life is disrupted when an unexpected vampire infestation grips their community. Upon its release, “Sinners” made a staggering $45.6 million in domestic box office sales and an additional $15.6 million from 71 international markets, dethroning the Warner Bros. production “A Minecraft Movie” as the U.S.’s leading film. Interestingly, this opening placed “Sinners” second only to Jordan Peele’s “Nope” ($44.4 million) in terms of the strongest domestic debuts for an original horror movie, although Peele’s “US” ($70.3 million) still holds the record for the highest.
Sinners Will Be Re-Released on IMAX 70mm
The Overwhelming Power of Word-of-Mouth + Quality Is At Play
Starting from May 15 through May 21, theaters across the U.S. and Canada will offer a second chance for moviegoers who missed the IMAX experience of “Sinners,” initially slated to end on May 1. This extension is due to high demand as reported by Variety. The following nine theaters will be showing the film: Lincoln Square 13 + IMAX in New York City, City Walk Stadium 19 + IMAX in Los Angeles, Metreon 16 + IMAX in San Francisco, Arizona Mills IMAX in Phoenix, Irvine Spectrum and IMAX in Irvine, Webb Chapel IMAX in Dallas, Indiana State Museum in Indianapolis, Autonation IMAX in Ft. Lauderdale, and Colossus IMAX in Toronto. According to Jeff Goldstein, President of Global Distribution for Warner Bros. Pictures, the film’s captivating nature prompted the studio to provide a second opportunity for viewers to enjoy it on 70mm IMAX screens.
The re-release of “Sinners” in IMAX shouldn’t be dismissed as a minor event. Compared to other films in recent memory, very few have generated such enormous interest in the superior resolution of IMAX 70mm, which warranted an instant reappearance in cinemas. Unlike “Top Gun: Maverick”, where an IMAX release occurred years after its initial run, this case is unique because the demand for IMAX quality was so great that it necessitated a prompt return to theaters.
If someone is overstating the effect of this re-release on the box office performance of “Sinners,” they should keep in mind that it’s only being shown in nine theaters instead of nationwide. However, even with such limited distribution, the strong legs and enduring popularity of the film are evident, demonstrating the power of great word-of-mouth combined with quality and star power (Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan are already considered one of the most successful pairings in cinema).
On its 13th day in theaters (Wednesday), the horror movie “Sinners” has raked in $6 million, pushing its total U.S. earnings to $141.6 million. This places it third among the highest-grossing post-pandemic horror films in the U.S., surpassing “A Quiet Place: Day One” and “Five Nights At Freddy’s”. The $6 million earned on this Wednesday is a record for a horror film, exceeding “IT”‘s $4 million from 2019 and even outperforming “Oppenheimer”‘s $5.9 million. Only “Deadpool & Wolverine” (2024) have had better second Wednesdays among R-rated titles, with $9.9 million. Thus, it is expected that “Sinners” will finish with a minimum of $230 million in the U.S., regardless of an IMAX re-release.
