Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars Film Gets An Official Title, Time Frame, & Release Date

Summary

  • Ryan Gosling is confirmed to star in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars film.
  • The official title of Levy’s film is confirmed to be Star Wars: Starfighter.
  • Levy said Starfighter is a standalone movie and will start production in the fall.

Actor Ryan Gosling will soon appear in director Shawn Levy’s new space epic, tentatively titled “Star Wars” project. After years of planning, the production team has officially announced its title and release date for this much-anticipated film.

In a distant galaxy, both Levy and Gosling are gearing up for their interstellar adventure. It’s been announced that Levy will be directing an upcoming “Star Wars” movie featuring Gosling. Previous discussions about Levy taking on a “Star Wars” film date back to 2022, following the acclaim of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Stranger Things,” and his success in other projects. However, in September 2023, the director confirmed that the production was underway but had been temporarily halted due to the 2023 Writers Guild of America Strike. By January 2025, it was revealed that Gosling himself would be a part of this project.

Back on April 17th, I had the pleasure of confirming the title for an upcoming Star Wars movie and the casting of Ryan Gosling – a piece of news dropped at the bi-annual Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, Japan. It was indeed fitting to make this announcement at such an occasion-the venue was buzzing with excitement.

Barry Levin’s Star Wars film, titled “Star Wars: Starfighter,” is slated for a May 28, 2027 release, as per The Hollywood Reporter. However, it remains to be seen whether this movie shares any connections with the 2001 video game of the same name.

At the event, Gosling himself was present and gave us a tantalizing teaser about the script being “exceptionally good.” He graced the stage and shared his enthusiasm by saying:

In truth, the quality of this script is simply outstanding. It boasts an exceptional tale accompanied by unique and captivating characters. It’s brimming with emotion and excitement, and it’s hard to imagine a more suitable director for this specific narrative than Shawn.

During his stage appearance, an image of Ryan Gosling’s childhood Star Wars-themed bedsheets was displayed on the screen. The star of The Fall Guy playfully admitted that his mother had kept this item and shared it, thinking fans would appreciate it, but suspecting it was her way of justifying her years of hoarding. However, the image confirmed that the Gray Man actor harbored dreams of joining the Star Wars universe. He further remarked, “As you can see from the picture, I guess I was probably dreaming about Star Wars before I even saw the film. And it’s probably shaped my idea of what a movie even was.”

Conversely, it seems not every actor aspired to be part of the galaxy far, far away. Rising star Mikey Madison, who won the 2025 Oscar for Best Actress, was said to have been offered a role in Levy and Gosling’s Star Wars film. However, the actress declined the chance to work alongside Gosling and Levy, according to Variety. The filmmaker was also present at the event and disclosed that their upcoming movie would be a standalone production, offering a fresh experience distinct from previous films. The storyline is set approximately five years after the events of Rise of Skywalker. In addition, Levy mentioned they would commence filming in the fall.

The space combat game, “Star Wars: Starfighter,” generates excitement as it represents Levy and Gosling’s initial foray into the franchise. Given their individual successes in their respective fields, there are high expectations set for them. Making “Starfighter” a standalone film is a clever strategy to draw in new fans since viewers won’t need prior films to grasp the story. Concerning “The Rise of Skywalker,” released in 2019, it received mixed reviews from critics with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 51%. However, the audience found it more enjoyable, giving it an 86% score. Some were disappointed, but thankfully, the next movie has no connection to it. Gosling’s casting instills hope that the upcoming “Star Wars” film could surpass its predecessors due to his versatile acting skills in action, drama, and comedy. So, let’s wait and see!

Star Wars: Starfighter will be released on May 28, 2027.
