As a lifelong cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must admit that I have seen my fair share of superhero flops, and Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern is certainly one of them. However, hearing about Aaron Pierre’s intention to watch the infamous film for research purposes brings a glimmer of hope to this weary heart.
As a fervent fan of Green Lantern, I’m eagerly preparing for my upcoming role by revisiting some classic DC movies. Yet, if I were you, dear admirer, I might advise skipping the specific DC film associated with my character, as even its lead actor might concur it’s not one to watch repeatedly.
As a seasoned movie critic, I recall Ryan Reynold’s “Green Lantern” as the inaugural live-action outing for the legendary DC Comics character, a cinematic endeavor that unfortunately flopped spectacularly at the box office and left viewers in dismay. The film has since been roundly panned by audiences, earning the dubious distinction of being one of the worst superhero movies to date, over a decade after its release. Even Reynolds himself can’t help but poke fun at his ill-fated “Green Lantern.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart in the new Green Lantern series, was asked if he’d watched Ryan Reynolds’ DC movie. Pierre replied that he hadn’t seen it, but he made it clear that Reynolds’ Green Lantern film is on his list to watch for research purposes. Pierre mentioned that he’s already familiar with the John Stewart version of Green Lantern and that the animated Justice League Unlimited series might have been one of his earliest encounters with the character.
Pierre announced that John Stewart, portrayed by Pierre, will join Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan in leading the DCU’s Lanterns series. Details about the plot are yet to be revealed, but DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Safran have hinted that Lanterns will follow an Earth-based detective story similar to HBO’s True Detective. Safran added that the murder mystery in Lanterns will tie into the larger narrative spanning the DCU movies and TV shows. Production for Lanterns is slated to start in January 2025, with Pierre expressing excitement about working with Gunn, Safran, executive producer Tom King, showrunner Chris Mundy, and executive producer Damon Lindelof. “We can’t wait to get started,” Pierre said.
Pierre might not know that Ryan Reynold’s “Green Lantern” movie is often criticized by fans. Although it’s widely acknowledged that the film isn’t great, as Gunn pointed out when he joked about inviting Reynolds back to play Green Lantern in the DCU, it could still serve as a lesson on what not to do. After all, Green Lantern characters like Hal Jordan and John Stewart are quite popular among DC fans, and they hope for a live-action adaptation that matches their legendary status. So, it might be beneficial for Pierre to learn from past mistakes in this case.
Lanterns is in pre-production at DC Studios.
