Saber Interactive’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Game is a Good Omen After Quest for Balance

Saber Interactive's Avatar: The Last Airbender Game is a Good Omen After Quest for Balance

As a die-hard fan who grew up with Aang and his friends, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension as Saber Interactive takes the reigns for the upcoming Avatar: The Last Airbender RPG. With a history of turning beloved IPs into engaging games, their work on Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead gives me hope that they’ll do justice to my favorite animated series.

Few shows are as defining as Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, with Aang’s journey remaining as emotional as it is brilliant nearly twenty years after its inception. Despite strong beginnings, however, the Avatar The Last Airbender IP has seen an air of divisiveness in its resurgence, a feat none more prevalent than in Avatar The Last Airbender: Quest for Balance, the GameMill Entertainment title released just last year to less-than-stellar reviews. With efforts made by Avatar Studios to reignite the IP in a more positive lens, including a world concert tour and its continued set of ATLA graphic novels, there remains hope that a video game set in its world will deliver on fan expectations.

Saber Interactive is planning to bring the Avatar universe to life in a new way by developing a triple-A role-playing game (RPG) based on “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” This project will be guided creatively by the original show’s creators, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, through their collaboration with Avatar Studios. According to Saber Interactive, they aim to strike a balance between the old and the new, taking players on an adventure set thousands of years in the past. Instead of progressing like “The Legend of Korra” did in 2012, this action-RPG will delve into a previously unexplored era, offering a fresh perspective. The unique premise and collaboration between Avatar Studios and Saber Interactive, whose notable works include “Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2” and the upcoming “A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead,” suggest that this could be a promising venture for the IP.

Saber Interactive Could Be Exactly What Avatar: The Last Airbender Needs

The History of ATLA Licensed Games

The ATLA series has had various types of games over the years, ranging from tabletop to online games. However, its console history may seem older than anticipated. During the mid-to-late 2000s, THQ developed four multi-platform ATLA titles, including ATLA: The Video Game, Into the Inferno, The Burning Earth, and a 2010 adaptation inspired by M. Night Shyamalan’s film. The Legend of Korra game, sharing its name with the original source material, was developed by Platinum Games in 2014, a company known for hits like Bayonetta and NieR: Automata. While the Legend of Korra game offered one of the most authentic ATLA gaming experiences, its reception was still divided, with fans acknowledging a good effort for a licensed game that could have been even better.

Quest For Balance’s Poor Reception

By 2023, it seemed as though Avatar: The Last Airbender – Quest for Balance was unexpectedly dropped on us. Announced mere months before its launch, Quest for Balance was immediately compared to its predecessors from nearly a decade ago, particularly in terms of graphics and gameplay. There was much speculation about rushed development, and by the time it hit the shelves, it was clear that the game wasn’t offering much new in comparison to previous games based on this IP. Fans yearned for an authentic Avatar RPG experience, and as Quest for Balance received a lukewarm response, the possibility of a new take on the series that didn’t directly rehash the same stories and characters emerged.

Saber Interactive and Avatar Studios’ Collaboration

With Saber Interactive hinting at a new start for the Avatar: The Last Airbender game series, fans might finally get the freedom they’ve longed for in this world since a while. Saber’s previous work on games like Evil Dead demonstrates their ability to adapt content from films and TV into engaging gameplay, and if given sufficient development time and attention, their ATLA project could truly be a fitting tribute to the IP. The excitement about partnering with Avatar Studios is also promising, as DiMartino and Konietzko’s creative input will likely enrich the project, something that was regrettably absent from the Netflix show following “creative disagreements” in its development.

While fans might approach the news about a possible Avatar: The Last Airbender game with some restraint, the prospect of this captivating universe being fully brought to life in the gaming sphere could serve as an exciting addition to the franchise’s future endeavors. Reports suggest that Avatar Studios is working on multiple films, and it has been disclosed by Paramount Consumer Products and Maximum Games that a multiplayer fighting game is under development – although specifics remain scarce for now. Given the reverence held by fans towards Avatar: The Last Airbender, the IP’s prosperity calls for careful handling, and Saber Interactive could be the studio to deliver it, particularly in terms of an RPG adaptation.
