SAG-AFTRA Can Call For An Immediate Strike Against Game Studios

As a long-time member of SAG-AFTRA and someone who has dedicated my career to bringing life to video game characters, I am deeply concerned about the potential impact of AI-generated content on our industry. The recent announcement by SAG-AFTRA granting permission for a strike if necessary is a bold move that shows the union’s commitment to protecting the hard work and creativity of its members.

SAG-AFTRA has given the go-ahead for an urgent work stoppage against gaming companies and media publishers regarding safeguards for AI-produced content.

On the union’s website last weekend, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, who holds the positions of Chief Negotiator and National Executive Director, announced that he has the authority to initiate a strike if studios fail to cooperate regarding the previously mentioned safeguards.

This news comes nearly a year after a strike was first authorized over these concerns.

If requested, the work stoppage will extend to all media-related projects governed by the Interactive Media Agreement, and every SAG-AFTRA member will halt their involvement in these projects, including the provision of all related services and performances. (Source: ParaphrasingTool.org)

The parties involved in the negotiations went on to explain that they were continuing their discussions. Yet, they have significant differences regarding the terms for safeguarding artificial intelligence.

“Crabtree-Ireland firmly stated, ‘Our determination remains strong and unwaivering, let’s avoid putting it to the test.’ Our members endorsed the decision to strike with an impressive 98% approval rate if employers fail to present a contract incorporating essential provisions, particularly in Artificial Intelligence.”

“Our dedication remains strong towards our contract workers, whose exceptional contributions power the success of the globe’s most beloved video games. Hurry, corporations, as time dwindles for reaching an agreement with us.”

When it comes to handling the increasing use of AI in video game development, Crabtree-Ireland expressed the union’s commitment to collaborating with “morally responsible AI businesses.”
