SAG-AFTRA Strike With Video Game Voice And Performance Artists To Continue

As a seasoned gamer and long-time supporter of fair labor practices, I find myself standing firmly behind SAG-AFTRA in their ongoing strike against video game studios. Having witnessed the evolution of the gaming industry over the past few decades, it’s disheartening to see that actors’ interests are not always prioritized when it comes to AI exploitation.

SAG-AFTRA has declared that their work stoppage against video game production companies will persist. This decision follows further talks regarding AI protections and improved overall work environments, but an agreement could not be reached.

Following a three-day stretch of planned talks, SAG-AFTRA declared that discussions for the Interactive Media Agreement with employers will carry on, with fresh meeting dates to be disclosed once finalized, according to their official statement.

On October 23rd, negotiations started up again with the group that consists of companies like Activision Productions Inc., Blindlight LLC, Disney Character Voices Inc., Electronic Arts Productions Inc., Formosa Interactive LLC, Insomniac Games Inc., Llama Productions LLC, Take 2 Productions Inc., and WB Games Inc.

According to the union, the ongoing strike continues for all parties involved in the Interactive Media Agreement, with two exceptions: those who have signed to the Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement or a temporary Interactive Media Agreement.

The recent video game industry work stoppage commenced in July, following a call to action by SAG-AFTRA after 18 months of talks between the union and multiple game production companies. The union is concerned that these studios may not prioritize their actors’ wellbeing regarding possible AI misuse.

SAG-AFTRA’s president, Fran Drescher, made it clear at the start of the strike that they won’t agree to a contract that permits companies to misuse AI at the expense of their members. She emphasized that this is not acceptable anymore. Once these companies present an agreement that our members can support, SAG-AFTRA will be ready for negotiations.
