SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered: Shadow-Dropped Now!

Summary

  • SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered is available on multiple platforms with revamped visuals, gameplay improvements, and new content.
  • The JRPG series has over ten releases, making it one of Square Enix’s most prolific, despite being considered a cult franchise.
  • The remaster includes new post-game content and gameplay additions like Parameter Inheritance and the Dig! Dig! Digger minigame.

The remastered version of SaGa Frontier 2 was unveiled during the Nintendo Direct presentation, revealing an updated visual design, gameplay enhancements, and additional content. Originally launched by Square in 1999 for the PlayStation 1, this Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG) has been confined to that console until now. Similar to its predecessor that was re-released as SaGa Frontier Remastered, the second installment is being remade. The trailer concluded with the surprising news that SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered had already been released and can be played on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5/4, PC, Android, and iOS devices.

The SaGa series, originally known as Makai Toushi SaGa in Japan and The Final Fantasy Legend in Western markets, is one of Square’s long-standing role-playing game (RPG) franchises. Over the years, it has evolved from the original series to Romancing SaGa, with remakes of its first two titles already available, followed by SaGa Frontier. Despite being a niche franchise, SaGa boasts more than ten releases, making it one of Square Enix’s most productive JRPG series. In 2021, two new games were added to the collection, SaGa Emerald Beyond and Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven, and there seems to be no slowing down in its production despite unfavorable circumstances.

The most recent news regarding the franchise unveiled the surprise release of SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered, an upgraded version of the 1999 JRPG. This remaster offers additional post-game content overseen by Akitoshi Kawazu, originator of the SaGa series. Enhancements include a streamlined interface for selecting story events, significantly improved visuals while preserving the game’s distinctive watercolor aesthetic, and added gameplay elements such as Parameter Inheritance and New Game+ mode. Additionally, this remaster offers an excavation minigame, originally exclusive to the PocketStation peripheral, titled Dig! Dig! Digger.

SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered Is Available Now

The remastered version of SaGa Frontier 2 is now accessible on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation consoles, Steam for PC, as well as Android and iOS devices. This JRPG marks Square Enix’s latest release, following a period where their lineup has been rather sparse since they revised their strategy last year. The only title with a tentative release date in 2025 is the upcoming Dragon Quest 1+2 HD-2D Remake. Apart from that, Square Enix has confirmed the development of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, while the fate of Dragon Quest 12: Flames of Fate and Kingdom Hearts 4, both announced previously, remains unclear as no encouraging updates or release windows have been disclosed.

It’s fascinating to observe that the SaGa series consistently gets new releases, even after Square Enix cancelled many projects and saw disappointing sales with several games that didn’t meet expectations. Last year, the company adjusted its long-term strategy for the Final Fantasy series by planning multiplatform releases due to the underperformance of both Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Given Square Enix’s cautious approach, it seems a bit puzzling that they are dedicating resources to less popular series like SaGa, but this is certainly good news for its dedicated fanbase.
