The director of the original Saints Row game has revealed he’s working on a proposal for a new game set earlier in the series’ timeline, but it won’t be a virtual reality title.
The 2022 reboot of Saints Row wasn’t well-received, as it lost much of what made the original games enjoyable. While the game earned $1.7 million before the studio that made it, Volition, closed, it didn’t satisfy fans with its weak story and different overall feel. Fortunately, there’s hope for the future of the Saints Row series, as a new game is currently being proposed.
Saints Row 1 Director is Going Back to His Roots With the Prequel
Fans of the Saints Row series might be getting a new game! Chris Stockman, the design director on the original Saints Row, recently shared on the Saints Row subreddit that he’s been asked to develop a pitch for a prequel or reboot. While he can’t share details yet, he’s excited about the opportunity and says his ideas for the game are starting to move beyond just concepts.

Stockman also confirmed the prequel won’t be a virtual reality game, and he’s focusing on the style of the original game. As the director of the first game, he has a strong idea of what he wants this new title to be, and he shared some of his vision with players.
According to Stockman, the goal with the new Saints Row game is to recapture the spirit of the original, which balanced a sense of realism with over-the-top humor and satire – something the later games lacked. He jokingly suggested a prequel could jump through different decades – the 90s, 80s, and 70s – and hinted at exciting possibilities. Fans are clearly enthusiastic about the idea of a prequel in the series.
