A developer involved with the original Saints Row game has hinted that Saints Row 7 is a possibility. However, if the game is made, it won’t continue the story directly after the 2022 Saints Row reboot.
Chris Stockman, who used to be a design director at the now-closed Volition studio (known for the Saints Row series), shared this information. He was a key figure in creating the first Saints Row game, which launched a franchise that lasted 20 years. Stockman left Volition six months after the game’s release in August 2006 and spent the next seven years working on independent games. In 2014, he founded Bit Planet Games, a studio in Austin, Texas, that has since developed and published around six games.
Saints Row 1 Director Working on a Prequel Pitch
After almost 20 years, Brian Stockman, a key developer on the original Saints Row, might be returning to the series. He recently shared on the r/SaintsRow subreddit that he’s been asked to pitch a new game – a prequel, essentially a Saints Row 0, rather than a direct sequel. Stockman called the opportunity a dream come true, explaining that his experience with the first Saints Row gives him a strong vision for how this prequel should be.
Saints Row Prequel Won’t Be a VR Game
Since 2014, developer Stockman and his studio, Bit Planet Games, have created several games for virtual reality. When he shared an idea for a new game set earlier in the series, some fans asked him not to make it a VR title, believing most players use standard gaming systems. Stockman responded that, if the game is made, it won’t be designed for virtual reality.
The Many Names of Saints Row IP Owners
While Stockman didn’t say who contacted him, it’s likely Plaion, previously known as Koch Media. They’ve owned the rights to the Saints Row game series since 2013, after the original publisher, THQ, went bankrupt. In 2018, Koch Media was bought by THQ Nordic, which later became Embracer Group. Koch Media then changed its name to Plaion in early August 2022, just before the new Saints Row game came out to a mixed reception. Embracer Group plans to reorganize by the end of 2025, splitting into three separate companies, and the part of the business that includes Plaion will be called Fellowship Entertainment.
I have a very clear vision for this prequel.
Saints Row 7 Unlikely To Arrive Before 2030s
Developing games with substantial budgets now typically takes around five years. So, even if plans move forward for a new Saints Row game based on recent ideas, it probably won’t be released until the early 2030s, if development starts soon. In the meantime, the studio behind the game, Bit Planet Games, is finishing up another project that they expect to announce shortly.
