Information about the upcoming 2022 Saints Row reboot has been shared online, hinting that the game might initially have been planned as a continuation of Saints Row: The Third.
In case you haven’t heard, a fresh take on the Saints Row series was introduced in 2022 by developers at Volition and publishers Deep Silver. This new version offers a completely novel tale and cast of characters, immersing players in a crime-ridden world called Santo Ileso. However, it seems that longtime fans of the franchise aren’t thrilled with this change, voicing their concerns over the altered tone and the storyline’s perceived lack of depth.
What the 2022 Saints Row Reboot Could Have Been
Information about the initial plan for the Saints Row reboot being a sequel can be traced back to a YouTube video by mrsaintsgodzilla21, shared via Synth Potato X. In this video, the creator recounts their visit to Volition’s development studio in 2019 and shares details about everything that was dropped or modified during the transformation from a sequel into a reboot. Originally titled ‘Saints Row Cinco’, the game was intended as a direct follow-up to Saints Row: The Third, but ended up being a reboot instead.
To bring back the Saints Row series for another installment, they’d need to rewrite the story from Saints Row 4 and undo Johnny Gat’s death in the third game. Instead of facing an alien invasion, the Saints and The Boss would depart Steelport and set up a new headquarters in Santo Ileso. In this sequel, all the original Saint members would be the main characters once more.
To elaborate, the creators designed this game with fans in mind, including elements they’d long asked for. The new Saints Row installment would adhere to a 20/80 rule regarding its tone: 20% of it would echo Saints Row 3 while the remaining 80% would reflect Saints Row 2. Additionally, there was an under-the-radar mission in the game where players could face off against Dex and eliminate him. In fact, development on the Saints Row sequel had progressed to a point where the actor portraying Pierce had even recorded lines for it.
When Things Started to Change
As a gamer, I’ve heard tales about how things shifted dramatically when THQ Nordic took over Deep Silver. Suddenly, they nixed the sequel concept and sent Volition back to brainstorm again. Strict limits were imposed on character dialogue, even banning profanities in the new narrative. To add to that, a fresh take on the reboot was proposed, one that would’ve kept all the original Saints, but alas, that idea was vetoed by THQ Nordic too.
Other Features That Could Have Been a Part of the Saints Row Sequel
In addition to the previously scrapped elements of the Saints Row sequel, further details emerged about abandoned and turned down features. Originally, Ultor was intended to replace the Marshals, and the Skill Tree would have branched out into wealth, fame, and muscle-focused paths. Body shields were initially planned but were deemed too violent by Deep Silver and subsequently dropped. Another intriguing feature, Criminal Ventures, would have given players the opportunity to customize the entire city, deciding which businesses should populate the open world.
In simpler terms, the game featured a system for issuing decrees, enabling players to establish rules within districts they governed. These regulations ranged from imposing dress codes to organizing standoffs to settle disputes. Additionally, the game reintroduced Cribs and customization options, allowing players to personalize their homes and churches by arranging items as desired. However, some features like purchasing furniture from a store were eventually removed.
In addition, cheats were meant to be unlocked towards the game’s finale, necessitating players to discover and open a colossal hidden Genki Pyramid for their use. Unfortunately, New Game+ mode was eliminated from the final version. For more specific information, I recommend checking out mrsaintsgodzilla21’s video, embedded below. However, it is important to note that these details are not confirmed officially, so they should be taken with a grain of salt.
