In the realm of captivating narratives, I’ve recently found myself immersed in the intriguing tale of a man named Uzuki – or should I say, his multiple personas – from the manga “Sakamoto-days”. This man’s life experience is nothing short of extraordinary, filled with tragedy, transformation, and an insatiable thirst for justice.
At the amusement park’s arcade, fans got their first glimpse of “X.” Initially portrayed as a madman pursuing the JAA, X eventually unveiled as the primary villain of the franchise. X’s relentless pursuit to reestablish the existing order, coupled with his distorted notion of justice, is consistently emphasized to the general reader.
In the later parts of the story of “Sakamoto Days“, it’s increasingly clear that the character’s traits go deeper than just their principles or goals. Things get even more puzzling when we learn about X having a personality disorder, leaving viewers wondering: Just who is X, truly?
The Misconception Behind X’s Persona
X’s Organization and Its Affects on His Health
Kei Uzuki, also recognized as X/Slur, heads up the X gang, a band of renegade killers aiming to dismantle or bring down the JAA. This group was initially established following an assault on the Al Kamar orphanage by Uzuki, with the intention of rescuing Gaku, Haruma, Kumanomi, and others. The orphanage was not a sanctuary as it was portrayed but rather a ploy, created to breed order-level assassins. In the same vein, X was a result of this institution.
Remarkably, this risky move guaranteed that every participant would not only match but possibly exceed the abilities of those currently in the order. This concept was validated when Kanaguri outperformed Satoda, who had been offered membership and was renowned as an Aikido Master. This notion was further emphasized in chapter 151, where Gaku was depicted engaging in intense combat with Nagumo.
Nonetheless, despite their might, Uzuki emerges as a unique type altogether. The mangaka introduced this concept during chapter 167, where Slur swiftly defeated Takamura, a character who surpasses Prime Sakamoto in strength. Moreover, Uzuki is depicted outpacing some of the most powerful characters. With Takamura’s demise, X now exceeds the organization and is also considered one of the strongest characters within this universe.
X’s Personality is Multifaceted
From Benevolence to Malevolence
Uzuki presents a demeanor that seems peaceful yet unfeeling, as demonstrated by the massacre at JAA and the attack on Al Kamar orphanage. However, it’s later disclosed that Uzuki’s brutal side is not shown to close companions/friends. Slur’s concern for Uda’s sacrifice during the confrontation with Takamura serves as additional proof of this observation.
Previously, Uzuki was known to be rather subdued and surprisingly kind-hearted for an assassin, as depicted in chapter 104. His regard for human life extended beyond his companions to all humans. In chapter 174, a notorious killer expresses:
It doesn’t feel right to take people’s lives just for my own happiness
The author suggests that the key factor driving this transformation was likely the onset of his Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID).
How the Past Affects the Present
The origin of X’s condition can be traced back to the murder of Rion Akao, which occurred during a time when Asaki ordered Slur to eliminate a specific candidate. This was followed by Asaki releasing Uzuki and his family (the Al Kamar Orphans) from restraint. The subsequent events led to Asaki’s malicious actions bearing fruit, resulting in Uzuki unwittingly taking Rion’s (who coincidentally was this “candidate”) life.
If individuals were to revisit chapter 104 now and investigate the origins of Dissociative Identity Disorder, it wouldn’t be illogical to surmise that this is when Uzuki may have developed this condition. It appears that Uzuki took on all of Rion’s characteristics as a means to deal with the overwhelming trauma the situation presented.
Currently, every reader observes that this progress significantly increases a character’s toolkit, as X is no longer limited to a single skillset. Uzuki’s abilities have expanded beyond personal capabilities, enabling an almost perfect imitation of all traits or skills associated with the character being portrayed. In fact, Slur’s Dissociative Identity Disorder was instrumental in their victory against Takamura and has earned them the title of “The Honored One” within their universe.
Following Rion Akao’s passing, the mangaka swiftly delves into Uzuki’s perspective on the divide between the everyday world and the assassin realm. As per Slur’s assertion, this division is merely an illusion. The conundrum of why someone like Rion perished while individuals such as Asaki, the organization, and Uzuki remained alive leaves X with a profound unease. However, upon recognizing that the kindness Rion sought to safeguard was non-existent, Slur arrives at a solitary conclusion: there is no genuine benevolence in this world.
I don’t care what happens to this world
After the assault on Al Kamar orphanage, a new persona, referred to as X/Slur, emerges. This individual erases all values that Uzuki cherished deeply and instead focuses solely on destroying the JAA, who caused immense suffering in his life and those close to him. In his discussion with Kashima, it becomes evident that X harbors no ambition for a new regime following the downfall of the JAA. Given the contradictions in his behavior, it can be inferred that Uzuki’s denial allows him to veer off course from his true objective: exacting revenge against the JAA.
