Salem's Lot Cast Discuss Bringing Their Characters to Life in New Adaptation

As a voracious reader of Stephen King’s works and a lifelong fan of horror, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming adaptation of “Salem’s Lot” on HBO Max. The novel has always held a special place in my heart, and to see it brought to life by Gary Dauberman, who’s no stranger to the King-iverse, is nothing short of exhilarating.

Salem’s Lot is a novel by Stephen King that centers around Ben Mears, a writer who revisits his childhood town to uncover some peculiar occurrences. First published in 1979, the vampire story has since gained cult status over the years. Various adaptations have been made with varying success, and now, Gary Dauberman, renowned for his work on Stephen King’s It and The Conjuring series, is attempting to breathe new life into it for HBO Max.

In this fan’s perspective, I recently had the pleasure of joining Game Rant for an engaging chat with Lewis Pullman (our Ben Mears) and Mackenzie Leigh (Susan Norton) about their roles in the latest adaptation of “Salem’s Lot.” Given that these characters have graced our screens multiple times before, due to this project being one of three significant adaptations, it’s safe to say that the challenge for Pullman and Leigh was no small feat. They shared insights into the unique qualities of their respective characters they felt were crucial, and how they aimed to authentically portray these traits on-screen.

Salem’s Lot Has an Interesting Cast of Characters

In Stephen King’s novel, ‘Salem’s Lot’, the main character, Ben Mears, portrayed by Pullman, experienced the tragic loss of both his parents at a young age and, more recently, his spouse. This heartbreaking series of events has left Ben burdened with significant emotional pain. Throughout the narrative, Ben develops a profound bond with a child named Mark Petrie, portrayed by Jordan Preston Carter. Pullman emphasized that this relationship was pivotal in shaping Ben’s character development, ensuring it was prominently depicted as the story unfolds.

In my writing, I made an effort to draw a comparison between my character, Ben, and Jordan Preston Carter’s character, Mark Petrie, towards the conclusion. Both characters experience the loss of their parents, which sets in motion a situation where Ben comes perilously close to transforming into something he once yearned for as a child. I put considerable thought into establishing this connection early on so that it would have a powerful impact at the end, as I felt this was a crucial aspect of the storyline.

Salem’s Lot’s Townsfolk Band Together in a Crisis

In Salem’s Lot, it’s the unity and bonds formed among the townsfolk during their hardships that may prove more crucial than the vampire threat itself. Mackenzie Leigh’s character, Susan Norton, stands out as a vital figure in this emerging alliance, demonstrating bravery and readiness to confront the vampire menace directly. Leigh aimed to portray Susan as remarkably similar to herself, striving to make this resemblance evident: striking, powerful, and unyielding in the face of adversity.

In my perspective, Susan represents a young lady yearning for freedom, seeking an escape from her existence. This sentiment resonates deeply with me, as it seems to have fueled my personal journey. Consequently, I aimed to convey this longing for freedom in my portrayal.

Many more individuals, such as a doctor, priest, and teacher, among others, band together with Ben and Susan to combat the vampire menace. However, not every character survives until the movie’s final moments, which is typical for a horror film like this one. Despite this, each character contributes significantly to ensuring that the town of Salem’s Lot puts up a valiant struggle before its fate is decided.

Salem’s Lot, based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, will stream on Max on October 3.
