San Andreas VR Project Put On Indefinite Hold By Meta

As a die-hard GTA San Andreas fan who spent countless hours cruising through Los Santos and its surroundings, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment at the news that Meta has put the VR project on hold. I was eagerly anticipating the chance to revisit Grove Street, my virtual home, in an immersive VR experience.

Meta has officially paused its work on the GTA San Andreas VR project following months of speculation. Initially announced over three years ago as a VR remake of San Andreas, the project has been put on hold indefinitely as the company shifts its focus towards other endeavors.

Although the game was under development for numerous years, an unexpected halt was imposed by Meta, leaving Virtual Reality enthusiasts worldwide with a sense of letdown.

‘Grove Street… Home’

At optimal moments, I’m not fond of VR games, but given the chance, I would have immersed myself completely in the GTA San Andreas VR experience. Visualize it: riding a BMX down to Grove Street, strolling around the Johnson house, and executing daring drive-bys against rivals. It would have been an extraordinary method of revisiting one of the greatest games ever created.

In a statement posted to YouTube, the Meta Quest team confirmed:

As an ardent fan, I’m pausing my work on GTA: San Andreas remaster for now as we delve into other exciting projects. Rest assured, I eagerly anticipate collaborating with the amazing team at Rockstar again in the near future!

It appears that the era for San Andreas VR has come to a close, as there’s been no significant progress since the Meta Quest team announced its development in 2021. Despite their initial announcement, so far we haven’t seen any gameplay footage or images of the game, implying that the project may not have advanced beyond its early stages.

Would you have played a GTA San Andreas VR remake if it had surfaced?
