On January 9th, Netflix unveiled the upcoming original anime series titled “My Melody & Kuromi” on their official Japanese website. This exciting new show is centered around the adventures of the two main characters, My Melody and Kuromi. Along with the announcement came details about production, visuals, and a promotional poster, as well as comments from those working on the series, even featuring statements from My Melody and Kuromi themselves.

The forthcoming Netflix original animated series titled My Melody & Kuromi introduces the beloved Sanrio characters My Melody and Kuromi. In contrast to traditional anime aesthetics, this series is crafted using the innovative stop-motion technique, reminiscent of Wallace and Gromit. The narrative unfolds in Mariland, a land where these characters reside according to their canonical home. Alongside the official announcement, Netflix unveiled the initial image showcasing the characters’ unique appearances in their stop-motion manifestation.

The series is being released to mark two important milestones for the main characters – My Melody turns 50 this year (introduced in 1975), while Kuromi celebrates her 20th anniversary in 2023. Though they might not enjoy Hello Kitty’s level of global recognition, My Melody and Kuromi are widely recognized as two of Sanrio’s most beloved characters, both in Japan and internationally.

In their respective domains, Asaki Misato and Mumeko Nemoto, our key creative talents, have previously garnered awards. Although this is the first significant stop-motion venture by TORUKU, a division of WIT STUDIO, there’s a palpable anticipation that it will be a hit. The project boasts a robust team and well-developed characters, providing My Melody & Kuromi with a firm foundation for success.

Writing dialogues for my beloved characters, My Melody and Kuromi, proved incredibly fulfilling for me as an author.

I actually wrote this script in 2020.

Despite the challenges posed by COVID-19, I couldn’t physically meet with Director Misato and the producers in person. However, our weekly remote meetings from home where we diligently communicated at scheduled times became a cherished creative phase that provided me with the motivation to carry on.

It’s likely that both young and old audiences will discover their cherished moments and quotes within this piece, as it overfloweth with affection for the enchanting realm of My Melody and her beloved companions, who captivate hearts of all generations.

I’m deeply appreciative of My Melody, who consistently brings warmth, positivity, and even the occasional laughter into my life.
