Whether a run in Saros goes well or poorly largely depends on how players choose to upgrade their abilities. Understanding which upgrades to focus on early will lead to more successful runs. Ultimately, the best approach depends on what each player is trying to achieve with that specific run.
When you enter one of the diverse areas in Saros, it’s important to have a goal. Are you trying to complete the area and move on? Are you focused on gathering Lunecite to improve your Armor Matrix? Or are you simply exploring, or returning to finish up anything you missed? I’ve spent a lot of time playing Saros recently, and I’ve created a priority list that works for almost any type of playthrough. Unless I specifically say otherwise, you can assume this list applies to all your runs.
Saros Run Upgrade Priority List
- Halcyon
- Attribute Enhancers
- Integrity & Health OR Lunecite Upgrades
- Guns*
- Artifacts
Focusing on maximizing artifacts right at the start of a Saros run can actually limit how good it becomes. After creating a prioritized list of upgrades, I’ve found each run is significantly improved—even easier than using Carcosan Upgrades. This works because it consistently gives your character, Arjun, benefits for the next run, while also strengthening what’s important in the current one, balancing both equally.
Saros frequently presents players with tough choices between upgrades – like choosing between two artifacts or two guns. When these situations arise, you need to consider what will help you succeed in the short term. However, the following guidelines are generally the most effective. Artifacts should be your lowest priority, but don’t hesitate to grab one if it’s a good fit, even early in a Saros cycle. If you’re deciding between an artifact you like and the Halcyon upgrade, always choose Halcyon.

1. Halcyon First, Always
You can improve your character permanently using Lunecite, but some of the most powerful upgrades require Halcyon. However, Halcyon is limited – there’s not much of it in each area, and you might not find any during a playthrough. Because of this, it’s always best to prioritize collecting Halcyon whenever you have the choice, to make sure you continue to get stronger over time.
2. Attribute Enhancers
After Halcyon, Attribute Enhancers are the best choice, and you should prioritize them over almost everything else. While it’s true you’ll eventually find plenty of Attribute Enhancers dropping from enemies, they still offer significant, free upgrades. Players have limited space for artifacts, and can only carry one main and power weapon from Saros, but there’s no limit to how many Attribute Enhancers you can hold. Unless you’re directly comparing them to Halcyon, always choose Attribute Enhancers.
3. Healthmaxxing is the Goal
The main character of Saros, Rahul Kohli, was chosen because his appearance matched the game’s focus on physical health and improvement. Honestly, Saros is a game where avoiding damage is key. You’ll likely get hit sometimes, so even a small increase in your health makes a big difference. This health boost ties into other choices you’ll make during the game. When choosing between upgrades, always prioritize Integrity and health. And if you’re deciding between health and any other stat, always choose health – it will significantly improve your chances of survival in Saros.
If you want to quickly gain upgrades and levels during a run, focus on boosting your Drive and Lunecite stats rather than maximizing your health.
4. And Then It’s Guns
Many players struggle with Saros runs because they focus too much on choosing guns with higher stats. While it might seem logical, having more powerful weapons isn’t always the best approach. Honestly, I think the way weapons improve throughout the game is a bit weak – I still prefer Smart Rifles and Eruptor Hand Cannons. My advice is to find a few guns you’re comfortable with, stick to those types, and just focus on improving their strength. Choose guns based on their perks and type, not just raw power, unless there’s a really big difference in strength.
If you find a better weapon in Saros – one that’s 10 points stronger, for example – definitely switch to it and keep an eye out for even better options. However, feeling confident and comfortable with your current gear should be your main priority, and that’s more important than having the absolute best weapon.
5. The Last Priority is Artifacts
It might sound odd, but a powerful item isn’t as important as having a good weapon you’re comfortable with, maximizing your health, getting free upgrades with Attribute Enhancers, or having Halcyon. Players should only pick up new items when they’re choosing between different items, when it’s the only available upgrade, or if it boosts your health (health should be prioritized over weapons). This advice goes against what many expect, as these upgrades are often the most readily available during a playthrough.

As you progress in Saros, your inventory space for artifacts is limited. Choosing the wrong artifact can ruin a run, while a good combination can help you defeat bosses. Don’t just pick up artifacts randomly; make sure each one complements your current playstyle. If it doesn’t fit, skip it and wait for a better option.
Have Fun!
I think Saros is the best game made exclusively for the PS5 so far. Putting together this list of priorities was fun for me, but you might not feel the same way. If you just want to play through the levels at your own pace and enjoy the experience, that’s perfectly fine! Ultimately, the most important thing in any video game is to have fun – if you’re not enjoying it, what’s the point? (Thanks to Reggie Fils-Aime at Nintendo for that thought!)
