PlayStation State of Plays are typically brief events, focusing on lesser-known games. Major first-party announcements from Sony are usually reserved for PlayStation Showcases. The recent February State of Play was no different, primarily highlighting indie and third-party games coming to PlayStation within the next two years. However, it concluded with a significant announcement from PlayStation Studios: Housemarque’s new game called Saros.
In a brief span of about ninety seconds, the trailer for Saros made a lasting impact, largely due to an impressive acting turn from Rahul Kohli, who’s known for his roles in Midnight Mass, iZombie, and The Fall of the House of Usher. This impression might have been even deeper for those familiar with Housemarque’s recent game, Returnal, as both appear to share some distinctive traits. And that’s definitely not a negative aspect.
Saros Looks Like a Returnal Sequel In All But Name
Saros Is Another Sci-Fi Time Loop Adventure
Launched in April 2021, the game titled “Returnal” presents a captivating Sci-Fi plot filled with enigmatic twists. As ASTRA pilot Selene Vassos, players navigate the challenging terrains of planet Atropos, aiming to locate the “White Shadow” signal and escape the time loop they’re trapped within. The game’s visual aesthetic perfectly complements its Sci-Fi setting, featuring eerie landscapes reminiscent of H.R. Giger’s work, bizarre alien creatures, colossal bosses, and an arsenal of advanced weaponry.
From the trailer, it appears that the game Saros is strongly resembling a familiar style and concept. Kohli’s narration in the preview suggests that Saros may follow the theme of time loops, as he mentions, “Each time the sun perishes, insanity ensues. And everything starts anew.
A fresh update on the PlayStation Blog provides additional insights into the narrative of Saros. As revealed, players assume the role of Arjun Devraj, a resolute Soltari Enforcer relentlessly pursuing his quarry, reminiscent of Selene’s quest for the White Shadow. This journey takes place in an abandoned off-world settlement on Carcosa, echoing the forbidden planet of Atropos from Returnal.
Furthermore, Housemarque shares their intention to craft an impactful character study filled with emotion, focusing on the price paid for shaping a fresh beginning. It appears that Arjun Devraj’s adventure in Saros will delve into personal growth and self-discovery, much like Selene’s experience.
The primary distinction between the narratives of Returnal and Saros lies in the fact that Saros will incorporate an “ensemble cast of NPCs,” whereas Returnal primarily focused on a single protagonist, Selene.
Saros Looks Like It’ll Be Another Bullet-Hell Roguelike Shooter
In terms of gameplay, “Returnal” appears to be a tough, third-person roguelike shooter with bullet-hell influences. Similarly, from the reveal trailer and PlayStation Blog post, it looks like “Saros” may adopt a similar approach.
As a devoted admirer, I can tell you that Housemarque’s Creative Director, Gregory Louden, characterizes Saros as a gripping single-player action game from the third person perspective. He goes on to label it as the pinnacle of their gameplay formula, suggesting an extraordinary evolution in the studio’s craft. This is subtly hinted at in the reveal trailer for Saros, where we see Arjun’s eye surrounded by a whirlwind of bullet-hell-like fireballs radiating outwards, offering a tantalizing glimpse into its gameplay dynamics.
The PlayStation Blog post essentially verifies that the game Saros follows the roguelike genre, although it has some distinct variations compared to Housemarque’s previous title. Louden clarified that one significant gameplay distinction between Saros and Returnal lies in the concept of permanent resources and progression. Notably, players will have the opportunity to permanently upgrade their suit and weapons in Saros, which sets it apart from Returnal’s focus on a randomized loot system.
