At the outset of a new game in Satisfactory, among your initial tasks, you’ll find it necessary to power up the biomass burner situated at the back of the Hub structure. This can be achieved by removing all the shrubs in the vicinity and setting the leaves ablaze, which is quite manageable.
Eventually, it’s important to accumulate a substantial amount of wood by cutting down trees in your factory zones and near truck routes. A chainsaw is typically the best tool for this task, but it’s worth noting that the chainsaw in the game Satisfactory comes with some peculiar traits you should be aware of.
How to Unlock the Chainsaw
The chainsaw becomes available as a part of the achievement called “Clearing Obstacles,” which falls under the Tier 2 milestones. You can access this reward once you finish the initial onboarding tasks. To obtain the chainsaw, you will have to invest:
- 500 screws
- 100 cables
- 100 concrete
Reaching this achievement not only unlocks three additional storage spaces in your inventory, but also provides you with the blueprint for producing high-efficiency solid biofuel – a valuable resource that’s perfect for powering biomass burners due to its energy efficiency. Don’t forget to set some aside as the chainsaw requires solid biofuel to function properly.
How to Create and Operate the Chainsaw
After reaching the necessary achievement, you can create a chainsaw at the tool workshop. Look for it under the “Tools” category. Here’s what you need to make the chainsaw:
- 5 reinforced iron plates
- 25 iron rods
- 160 screws
- 15 cables
After creating your chainsaw, it’s time to arm it. Retrieve it from your inventory by clicking on the chainsaw and moving it into either of the “Hands” slots. To switch between items in your hands, simply scroll your mouse wheel up or down.
Your chainsaw requires specific biofuel from your inventory to operate effectively. Other types of biomass or fossil fuels won’t suffice: just like regular biomass burners, the chainsaw is designed exclusively for a single type of fuel.
After filling up your chainsaw with enough fuel to run, you can utilize it to fell trees that would otherwise be difficult to remove. This ranges from small trees resembling bushes, all the way up to towering giants reaching towards the sky. The size doesn’t matter – for every unit of solid biofuel, your chainsaw can cut down approximately 2.5 trees. Given this, it’s wise to maintain an even supply of biofuel in your storage.
The chainsaw also has two modes you can switch between: Single Mode and Area Mode.
- Single Mode will only chop down the tree or bush you’re currently targeting.
- Area Mode will remove all the trees and bushes in a small radius around the targeted plant.
It’s generally more beneficial to let vegetation grow untouched, but in most cases, you should opt for ‘Area Mode’. This mode is the default setting on your chainsaw. Interestingly, cutting down two trees simultaneously doesn’t increase the cost compared to doing it one at a time. Moreover, bushes don’t consume any fuel, so using Area Mode comes without any disadvantages.
A final tip for using the chainsaw in Satisfactory: Always keep another weapon equipped alongside it. Contrary to some other games, the chainsaw here is merely a tool and won’t harm hostile creatures. Keep in mind that you might encounter dangerous animals while felling trees, so it’s wise to stay vigilant and carry an additional weapon for protection.
