Over the years, fans of the epic trilogy known as “The Lord of the Rings” have encountered various forms of Sauron, the Dark Lord. After a gap of 24 years since his debut in the 2001 film “The Fellowship of the Ring“, Sauron continues to puzzle fans about his true appearance hidden beneath his strong and misleading armor. However, there’s no need for speculation as his real form is now revealed to the audience’s delight.
J.R.R. Tolkien, the esteemed author of “The Lord of the Rings,” was secretive about Sauron’s appearance. Whether he did this to stimulate readers’ imaginations or to maintain a sense of mystery surrounding the villain, the movies didn’t provide a clear depiction of his true form. In truth, Sauron was an incredibly skilled Maia, initially a student of Aulë, and he was created eons before life existed. By the Second Age, this Dark Lord had already forged a powerful artifact, the One Ring, with the intention of seizing control over Middle-earth and every soul that resided within it. During the Third Age, after losing the Ring, Sauron chose not to reveal himself but instead took on the form of the Great Eye or the Eye of Sauron during the War of the Ring. This allowed him to observe and manipulate events across Middle-earth, instilling fear in those who gazed upon it.
The Lord of the Rings’ Sauron Is Just as Frightening in His True Form

In Amazon Prime’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” the show creators revealed that the villain Sauron transformed seamlessly between the personas of Halbrand and Annatar. Given his malicious, power-seeking nature, Sauron adopted these identities to trick the Elves, including Galadriel initially, thereby establishing Eregion as a base for his wicked schemes. The Elves, unaware of Annatar’s true identity, warmly received him, unwittingly providing Sauron access to infiltrate every corner with his cunning strategies. With season 2 of “The Rings of Power” concluding in August 2024, viewers have been left pondering what Sauron’s genuine form might be.
In a Reddit discussion, a fan of “Lord of the Rings” shared an image from Weta Workshop’s concept art book for the third Hobbit film, displaying the Necromancer’s appearance as depicted in the artwork. Although the movie eventually portrayed Sauron differently, this image offers a glimpse into what his “actual form” might have been, aligning with Tolkien’s description from the books of a towering figure that was more terrifying than human. One Reddit user commented that the second image resonated with their long-held mental image of Sauron – an almost featureless and inhuman-looking entity, resembling a demonic apparition rather than a tangible being. Another Redditor admired how Sauron appeared powerful and frightening in these depictions.
Amazon has officially confirmed that Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will have a third season, bringing back Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, and Charlie Vickers as Sauron. In this upcoming season, we’ll witness Sauron at his peak power, having seized the Nine Rings intended for Men and amassing an Orc army under his ominous shadow.
