Say Goodbye to 5 of the Best Pokemon Ever in Pokemon Champions

The latest update to Pokemon Home, which now links Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Pokemon Champions, marks the beginning of a new competitive scene, especially as support for online Ranked Battles in older Gen 9 games is ending. While Pokemon Champions seems poised to become a major hub for VGC players with its extensive battle feature support through the Omni Ring, there are some concerns. Some fans are already criticizing the game’s VP system, calling it unfair because players lose VPs for almost anything they do outside of battling. It’s also important to remember that Pokemon Champions is still under development.

Don’t expect Pokemon Champions to have everything available right away. Currently, the game only includes Mega Evolution through the Omni Ring, and not all playable Pokemon are available at launch. It’s unknown how often the game will be updated with new content and Pokemon, or if the developers plan to include all Pokemon and battle mechanics eventually. Recent announcements confirm that five top competitive Pokemon won’t be included at launch, and may never be added to the game.

Unevolved Pokemon Are Officially Out in Pokemon Champions

Okay, so I’ve been playing Pokemon Champions and noticed something kinda weird. Even though Pikachu’s in the game, some popular competitive Pokemon like Porygon2, Dusclops, Electabuzz, Magmar, and Clefairy aren’t. It’s not about them being weak, though! These Pokemon are actually really good in tournaments and online battles because of a special item called Eviolite. Basically, if a Pokemon isn’t fully evolved and it holds Eviolite, its Defense and Special Defense get a huge 50% boost. This lets you build them up with EVs and still have a seriously strong, bulky Pokemon. So, it’s not that these Pokemon need to evolve, Eviolite just makes them really effective as-is.

I was a little disappointed to hear from Masaaki Hoshino, one of the producers of Pokemon Champions, that you won’t be able to use partially evolved Pokemon when the game first comes out. He told HypeBeast there aren’t any plans to add them right now, which is a bummer, but hopefully they’ll consider it in the future!

Dusclops as a Reliable Trick Room Setter

Dusclops has always been a strong choice for Trick Room teams due to its naturally high Defense and Special Defense (130 each) and slow speed. Because it doesn’t fully evolve into Dusknoir, it can hold Eviolite, which increases its already impressive defenses by another 50%. As a Ghost-type, it’s unaffected by Fake Out, and its boosted bulk makes it a reliable Trick Room setter, though it won’t be a strong pick in Pokemon Champions.

Electabuzz and Magmar as Powerful Redirection Tools

Eviolite is a great item for making Electabuzz and Magmar effective support Pokemon, giving them good defenses and unique advantages. While Electabuzz is faster and has the Static ability (which can paralyze opponents on contact), Magmar is arguably better because its Flame Body ability burns attackers, dealing damage and lowering their Attack stat. Both Pokemon are useful, but Magmar would have been stronger in Pokemon Champions, while Electabuzz had an edge in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, even without the Follow Me move.

Clefairy as an OP Pokemon in Double Battles

Clefairy is a stronger choice than Electabuzz or Magmar for redirecting attacks. Both Clefairy and those other Pokémon can use the move Follow Me to draw enemy fire, but Clefairy has an added benefit: its Friend Guard ability. Friend Guard reduces damage taken by allies by 25%, which is especially helpful in double battles. When opponents are forced to attack Clefairy instead of your other Pokémon, Friend Guard ensures that your second Pokémon takes significantly less damage if hit by an area-of-effect move.

Porygon2 as The Best Unevolved Pokemon Ever

Porygon2 is a consistently strong Pokémon in competitive battles, known for its solid defense and attack stats, as well as its diverse movepool. It’s versatile and can be used in many ways – as a slow, powerful attacker in Trick Room teams, a durable wall, a bulky offensive threat, or even a support Pokémon. When equipped with the Eviolite item, Porygon2 is often considered a top-tier choice in VGC (Video Game Championships) format. It’s disappointing, however, that it isn’t included in Pokémon Champions.
