Say Goodbye to Dragon Ball Super For Now

This article contains spoilers from the Dragon Ball series.

Often called the foundation of modern action anime (or “Shonen”), Dragon Ball remains incredibly influential. It fundamentally shaped the anime industry, and many popular series wouldn’t exist as we know them without it. Created by Akira Toriyama, the series is facing uncertainty following his death in 2024.

It’s understandable that Akira Toriyama’s passing deeply affected the Dragon Ball franchise, even leading to a pause in the ongoing manga, Dragon Ball Super. Over a year has passed since new chapters stopped appearing, and its future is increasingly uncertain, largely due to ongoing issues with the series’ rights. These issues are limiting the current artist, Toyotaro, who is now responsible for continuing the story. If Toyotaro were to stop working on the manga, it would likely signal the end of the series, leaving anime and movies as the only remaining Dragon Ball content for fans.

Fans Say Goodbye To Dragon Ball As Toyotarou Seems To Be Focused On Other Projects For Now

  • Toyotaro revealed new artwork for the Gundam card game
  • He also worked on a new one-shot original manga called Lost Samurai

Dragon Ball began as a creation of Akira Toriyama in 1984 and rapidly became a hit. Even today, decades later, the series remains incredibly popular and continues to produce new content. A continuation of the story, Dragon Ball Super, was created with Toriyama’s involvement alongside Toyotaro, who primarily handled the artwork. Sadly, after Toriyama’s recent passing, Dragon Ball Super went on hold, and it’s becoming increasingly unclear if it will ever return.

Several obstacles are preventing the manga’s revival, primarily legal problems regarding its ownership. While fans hope Toyotarou can take over and continue the series independently, he’s currently unable to do so. At the same time, Toyotarou can’t indefinitely wait for permission to proceed.

Toyotarou is currently working on several projects alongside his other commitments. He recently designed artwork for a card in the Gundam Card Game, a series he enjoys, and is also creating his own original series called Lost Samurai. Because he’s so busy, he may continue to take on projects outside of Dragon Ball if things don’t change.

Toyotarou Might Want To Create His Own Series After Toriyama’s Passing

Toyotarou has been a lifelong Dragon Ball fan, even creating fan art before he officially worked on the series. While he’s loved contributing to Dragon Ball Super, he recognizes it will always be most closely linked to Akira Toriyama’s vision. Though he’s now creating his own story arcs within the Dragon Ball universe, Toyotarou seems interested in eventually focusing on completely original projects, as demonstrated by a recent one-shot series he created.

Fans Await Exciting Content From Toyotarou

Toyotarou is considering creating his own manga series, but that means leaving Dragon Ball. At nearly 50 years old, he can’t delay his personal projects indefinitely, especially with ongoing legal issues surrounding Dragon Ball. Regardless of what he works on, his fans will undoubtedly support him. He’s a skilled writer with solid artistic ability, and fans are excited to see him return to manga, with or without his involvement in Dragon Ball.

Even though Dragon Ball Super is currently on break, there are still 107 chapters available for fans to enjoy. You can read the Dragon Ball Super manga on Manga Plus.
