Say Goodbye To The Rinnegan, And Welcome An Even Stronger Eye In Boruto

This article contains spoilers from the Boruto series.

The Boruto series has introduced many new abilities, but classic powers are still crucial. Fans know some of these, like the incredibly powerful Rinnegan, which Sasuke Uchiha used for a long time.

Although characters in Boruto still possess abilities from the original Naruto series, they aren’t nearly as powerful as they used to be. Many fans believe this is due to inconsistent writing, and it seems the author intentionally weakened the older characters. The Rinnegan, once a tremendously powerful ability, feels significantly less impactful now. Meanwhile, new powers like the Kokugan have emerged, and currently appear even stronger than the dojutsu we’ve seen before.

The Rinnegan Isn’t Being Utilized Properly In Boruto

In the Naruto series, the Rinnegan was an exceptionally powerful ability, considered almost god-like, and very few characters could use it. Its capabilities were vast and overwhelming. This power allowed control over the Six Paths and even life and death. However, in the Boruto series, the Rinnegan seems to have become much less significant.

Besides the Six Paths technique, the Rinnegan has a powerful, hidden ability called the Outer Path. The Rinnegan grants its user control over life and death. Konan explains to Naruto that Nagato is sacrificing himself because he believes in him.

It’s surprising that Sasuke doesn’t fully use the Rinnegan’s abilities in the Boruto series, particularly in the manga. It’s also odd that even characters who possess the Rinnegan, like the Shinju, rarely demonstrate its basic powers – it often feels like it’s just there for visual effect.

With Sasuke no longer possessing the Rinnegan, it’s essentially retired as a power in the series, and it’s improbable anyone will obtain it again. The Boruto series has introduced the Kokugan as a new, powerful eye ability to take its place.

The Kokugan Is The Strongest Eye In The Boruto Series

The Rinnegan is known as the power of the Six Paths, but the Kokugan appears to be even more formidable, with a recurring theme of eight. The Kokugan manifests as a black eye featuring eight golden, triangular spokes. This unique eye grants its user access to two powerful techniques: Sukunahikona and Daikokuten.

You have an ability that lets you instantly make yourself and objects smaller. However, you can’t use it on living things like people, right? — Sasuke Uchiha to Isshiki Otsutsuki

This technique lets the user reduce the size of themselves and any non-living things down to microscopic levels, and then instantly restore them to their original size. It’s an incredibly powerful ability, capable of evading even the Senrigan’s detection range.

Daikokuten grants access to a special pocket dimension where time stands still. Users can store anything they need inside – food, people, or anything else. Beyond storage, this ability also lets the user summon enormous, incredibly durable blocks that are difficult even for highly skilled opponents to break.

Kawaki Will Surpass Isshiki’s Kokugan Usage

Currently, Isshiki Otsutsuki is the only one who’s fully unlocked the potential of the Kōgan. However, Kawaki has inherited this power and is likely to eventually exceed Isshiki’s abilities. Thanks to the Karma he received from Isshiki, Kawaki possesses all of Isshiki’s experience and is poised to become even more powerful in the future.

Because none of the central characters currently possess the Rinnegan, it’s slowly being forgotten. This incredibly powerful and historically important eye has been diminished in the Boruto series, which many fans find disappointing.

Fans are hoping that Kishimoto and Ikemoto will eventually explain why the Rinnegan seemed so weak in the story, and why characters like Naruto and Sasuke were made less powerful to make room for the younger generation. Until then, fans are left to believe that the Kōkugan is actually stronger than the Rinnegan, which is disappointing to many.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is the continuation of the Boruto story, created by Mikio Ikemoto and overseen by Masashi Kishimoto.
