Monkey D. Luffy is the main character in One Piece, and he’s become an incredibly powerful pirate. When he first started his adventure, Luffy was weak and unknown in a huge world. But through countless challenges, he’s grown tremendously strong. These experiences have made him one of the Four Emperors, and he continues to strive for even greater power and recognition.

I’m absolutely fascinated by how strong Luffy has become throughout his journey! He’s unlocked so many incredible abilities – everyone knows about his Gears, like Gear 2, Gear 3, all the different Gear 4 forms, and of course, the amazing Gear 5. But you know what’s really cool? There’s this one transformation he has, called Dark Luffy, that most fans haven’t even heard of! Eiichiro Oda actually came up with the design for it years ago, and it was only revealed to us One Piece fans pretty recently. It’s seriously a hidden gem!

Luffy has become a remarkably creative fighter. He’s developed techniques like Gear 2, where he speeds up his blood flow to gain a huge boost in strength. He also uses Gear 3, which involves inflating his bones with air, effectively giving him the powerful limbs of a Giant and allowing him to inflict massive damage.

Gear 4 lets Luffy dramatically increase his muscle mass and strength. He also becomes faster and combines his Devil Fruit powers with Haki for even greater elasticity. As the editor’s note pointed out, Luffy’s frightening new form appeared to be a variation of Gear 4. In this state, Luffy became much more aggressive and his appearance changed drastically, with spiky hair and his entire body coated in Armament Haki, even developing claw-like hands. His face was sharp and filled with rage. This dark transformation also seemed to be linked to the Hagoromo cloak ring around his neck, suggesting it was a special, unique Gear form.

This new version of Luffy would have been incredibly impressive and likely very popular with fans. However, it never actually appeared in the One Piece story. Instead, the idea evolved into Snakeman, which ultimately served as the basis for Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation.

Dark Luffy Would Be Loved By All Fans

Although Dark Luffy hasn’t appeared in the One Piece manga yet, it’s safe to say fans would be thrilled to see him. Current shonen anime and manga fans often enjoy darker, more intense content. Ultimately, fans of the genre love thrilling fights and strong main characters. Luffy often stands out because he’s usually silly and lighthearted, which has sometimes been a point of criticism from fans.

Gear 5 has really amplified the comedic side of Luffy’s character. He’s constantly laughing and doesn’t seem to take anything seriously, which some fans haven’t enjoyed. Many would likely prefer – and it would create a better contrast – if Luffy had a form where he was consistently serious and powerfully imposing, balancing out his typically playful Gear 5 state.

Currently, Gear 5 is Luffy’s most powerful transformation, but he’s also shown he can still effectively use Gear 4, as seen in his battles with the Seraphims and when he broke free from the castle Rodo built on Elbaf.

This means Luffy will likely have chances to use his dark form again in the future. It’s important to remember that this dark form actually came before and influenced his Gear 5. We might even see Gear 5 develop further, with this dark transformation potentially becoming a powerful upgrade within it.

Luffy currently needs to refine his Gear 5 abilities and strengthen his Haki. Once he masters these skills, he may unlock even more powerful transformations in the future.
