This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
Watching One Piece right now, we’re deep into the Elbaf arc, and it’s clear Oda is really highlighting the importance of Haki. Fans have long suspected Haki would become incredibly powerful as we get closer to the end of the story – there was still so much we didn’t know about it. And Elbaf is starting to reveal those secrets. Even before the flashback to Loki began, it seemed pretty obvious that Luffy was going to need to significantly improve his Haki.
Scopper Gaban warned Luffy that he needed to be strategic with his Conqueror’s Haki, and the recent flashback with Loki clarified what Gaban meant. We saw in God Valley that a large amount of Haki can overcome even seemingly invincible powers. This means that to defeat enemies like the Domi Reversi monsters and Imu, Luffy needs to master controlling and increasing his Haki output. This new development with Haki will be crucial for Luffy’s growth and will likely be key to future battles.
Luffy Will Learn To Manipulate Haki Mass And Critical Mass
Image by Viz Media Currently, Luffy is definitely among the strongest Haki users in One Piece, as he understands all its different types and even the variations within those types. But simply knowing about these variations isn’t the same as truly mastering them.
I’ve noticed Luffy understands all three types of Haki pretty well, but he hasn’t truly mastered any of them yet. Oda, the author, has confirmed that Luffy is most naturally gifted with Conqueror’s Haki. That suggests we’ll likely see him become even more powerful with it in the future, as there’s still a lot of potential for him to unlock.

While in Elbaf, Scopper Gaban warned Luffy to be mindful of his Haki usage, explaining that the Holy Knights aren’t actually immortal. This suggests that Conqueror’s Haki can overcome what appears to be immortality. However, it’s not just having Conqueror’s Haki, but how it’s used. We first saw hints of this concept – specifically, the idea of a ‘mass’ of Haki – during the events at God Valley.
Basically, the stronger someone’s Haki is, the better it is at breaking through an opponent’s defenses and causing more harm. Luffy consistently uses Haki in battle, but he needs to significantly increase its power to effectively injure immortal beings. A stronger Haki attack will inflict real damage that’s difficult for them to recover from.
Luffy’s Haki Will Counter Immortality
Image by Viz Media The Elbaf arc presents Luffy with his greatest challenge yet: mastering Conqueror’s Haki. He needs to grasp the idea of ‘Haki mass’ – understanding how much power to use at any given moment. Standard Conqueror’s Haki won’t be effective against the Holy Knights; instead, Luffy must learn to deliver powerful attacks packed with a greater concentration of Haki. This increased ‘Haki mass’ is crucial to overcome Imu’s Abyssal powers and reach his true form.

Monkey D. Luffy Will Need Stronger Haki To Beat Imu
Image by Viz Media Luffy is currently facing the Holy Knights. Considering the setup of Elbaf, it appears Loki will be transformed into Luffy’s main opponent for this arc. However, Imu presents a different challenge. It’s very unlikely Luffy will battle Imu during the Elbaf arc. While Luffy is powerful, he still needs to significantly improve his Haki.
Even incredibly powerful characters like Rocks, Roger, and Garp couldn’t harm Imu because his Haki is on a completely different level. Luffy isn’t strong enough to defeat him right now, and needs more time to develop. However, it’s almost certain that Luffy will significantly improve his Haki during the Elbaf arc. For now, fans just need to be patient and wait for the story to move beyond the Loki flashback.
