Mega Evolutions, powerful temporary transformations Pokémon can achieve during battle, haven’t been featured in the main Pokémon games for more than seven years. Luckily, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is bringing them back! Not only that, but it’s introducing completely new Mega Evolved forms for twenty-six different Pokémon from across many generations, not just those originally introduced in the sixth generation.
As you’d expect with such impressive changes, each new Mega Evolution in the game is incredibly strong, and this power is showcased in the innovative real-time battle system. Pokemon Legends: Z-A features many exciting Mega Evolutions, and here are some of the most powerful ones introduced in the game so far.
Mega Meganium
Benefits Heavily From Its New Secondary Fairy Type
- Types: Grass/Fairy
- Base Stat Total: 625
Since it first appeared in the second generation of Pokémon, Meganium has often been considered a rather plain-looking starter with underwhelming stats. It was clear the Pokémon needed a boost, and its new Mega Evolution finally gives this often-overlooked Grass-type the recognition it deserves.
Mega Meganium is a much more powerful and visually appealing evolution of its original form. Gaining the Fairy type boosts both its attack and defense, though it becomes extra vulnerable to Poison-type attacks. Its Special Attack dramatically increases from 83 to 143, allowing it to quickly defeat opponents with powerful moves like Petal Blizzard and Dazzling Gleam.
Mega Emboar
Even Though It Wields A Fiery Spear, Its Defenses Got The Biggest Buff
- Types: Fire/Fighting
- Base Stat Total: 628
Emboar stands out from the starter Pokemon in Pokemon Legends: Z-A for a couple of reasons. It’s from the fifth generation of Pokemon, while the others are from the second. Also, it already has two types – Fire and Fighting – when you first get it. Emboar has always been a strong Pokemon, capable of dealing and taking a lot of damage, and its new Mega Evolution stays true to that strength. It doesn’t change its types or significantly alter its stats.
Mega Emboar now fights with a flaming spear, inspired by the warrior Zhang Fei. This new weapon significantly boosts its Attack, increasing it from 123 to 148. Surprisingly, its Special Defense received the largest improvement, rising from 65 to 110 – matching its Defense stat. While still slow, Mega Emboar is now remarkably strong and resilient.
Mega Greninja
It Seems Ash-Greninja Was Not Enough
- Types: Water/Dark
- Base Stat Total: 630
Many Pokémon fans were disappointed that the Kalos starters – Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja – didn’t receive Mega Evolutions, especially since Mega Evolution was first introduced in their generation. Luckily, Pokémon Legends: Z-A fixes this by giving them all new, powerful Mega Evolved forms. However, players can only earn these forms by competing in online ranked battles over three seasons, meaning only Mega Greninja has been available since the game’s release.
It’s unusual to see another transformation for Greninja, especially since it already had Ash-Greninja. With Ash-Greninja removed from recent games like Scarlet and Violet, Mega Greninja seems to be filling that role. This new form is straightforward, offering small boosts to Speed and Special Attack. However, the limited abilities in Legends: Z-A really hold Mega Greninja back, as Greninja’s original success relied heavily on its Protean ability.
Feraligatr
A Powerful Dragon With A Big Set Of Chompers
- Types: Water/Dragon
- Base Stat Total: 630
Mega Feraligatr is the most powerful Mega Evolution of the original starter Pokémon, and it actually outperforms Mega Greninja despite having the same overall stats. What makes it so strong is its new Dragon typing, which fans have wanted for years.
Mega Feraligatr is a powerful Pokémon that can use Dragon-type attacks with a significant boost in power. On top of that, its Attack stat increases by a whopping 60 points, making it incredibly strong offensively. If Mega Feraligatr ever appears in a game that includes Pokémon Abilities, it would be even more formidable with the right Ability, such as Strong Jaw or Sheer Force, further enhancing its damaging potential.
Mega Eternal Flower Floette
The Only Non-Fully Evolved Pokemon Who Can Mega Evolve
- Type: Fairy
- Base Stat Total: 651
Pokemon Legends: Z-A introduced a curious and interesting detail with AZ’s Floette: even though it hasn’t fully evolved, it can Mega Evolve – something the fully evolved Florges can’t do. This is likely because this specific Floette is unique and central to the game’s story, particularly towards the end.
Eternal Flower Floette is already a powerful Pokémon, but its Mega Evolution takes it to another level, giving it stats comparable to Legendary Pokémon. Mega Eternal Flower Floette has an incredibly high Special Attack stat of 155, and it can use the powerful Fairy-type move, Light of Ruin, which deals 140 damage. While Light of Ruin does cause some damage to Floette when used, its strength still makes it a worthwhile ability.
Mega Starmie
The Weirdest Mega Evolution Is Also One Of The Strongest
- Types: Water/Psychic
- Base Stat Total: 660
Mega Starmie quickly became a popular topic online before the release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and it’s easy to understand why. Its design is hilariously odd – imagine a Starmie with longer legs and movements that seem almost human! Despite looking so unusual, Mega Starmie is also one of the most powerful Mega Evolved Pokemon featured in the game.
Okay, so regular Starmie is pretty balanced, but Mega Starmie? Its Special Attack is way higher than its Attack, which is awesome because it lets me use some seriously powerful moves with that Special Attack boost – things like Aqua Jet, Liquidation, or even Zen Headbutt. Honestly, anyone who’s played through the story of Legends: Z-A will tell you how strong this thing is. That Rogue Mega Starmie is a total beast and gives you a real run for your money in one of the hardest boss fights in the game!
Mega Dragonite
The Original Pseudo-Legendary Finally Got The Mega Evolution It Always Deserved
- Types: Dragon/Flying
- Base Stat Total: 700
When Mega Evolutions were first introduced in Generation Six, several powerful Pokémon—like Tyranitar, Garchomp, and Metagross—received these enhanced forms. Because of this, fans have been requesting a Mega Evolution for Dragonite, the very first pseudo-legendary Pokémon from Generation One, for years. Luckily, Pokémon Legends: Z-A delivers, as Mega Dragonite was prominently featured in the game’s promotion.
Dragonite is already a very powerful Pokémon, and its Mega Evolution takes that to another level. Mega Dragonite boasts incredibly high stats, making it one of the strongest Pokémon in the game. It’s faster and tougher than regular Dragonite, but its most impressive feature is a massive Special Attack stat of 145, allowing moves like Hyper Beam and Draco Meteor to deal devastating damage. If future games give Mega Dragonite its signature Multiscale ability, it could become almost unstoppable.
Mega Zygarde
Gives Mega Rayquaza A Run For Its Money
- Types: Dragon/Ground
- Base Stat Total: 778
Mega Rayquaza is frequently called the strongest Pokémon ever because giving an already powerful legendary Pokémon another, even stronger form was bound to create problems. It looks like the creators, Game Freak, are revisiting that controversial decision in the new game, Pokemon Legends: Z-A. The game’s featured legendary, Zygarde, also gains a completely new Mega Evolution, appearing in the final, most important battle.
Mega Zygarde’s massive cannon hints at its incredible power, and it lives up to the expectation with the highest Special Attack in the entire Pokémon series, reaching a total of 216. Beyond that, it also boasts high Speed and HP. Adding to its strength is a new, devastating move called Nihil Light, which deals 200 damage and bypasses any stat boosts the opponent might have, making it a truly formidable attack. The biggest mystery now is what ability Mega Zygarde will receive in future games; if it’s as strong as Mega Rayquaza’s Delta Stream, it could easily become one of the most powerful Pokémon ever designed.
