At Gamescom 2025, I was given the opportunity to try out Scott Pilgrim EX, a beat ’em up game set for release in 2026, courtesy of Tribute Games – a team that is already familiar with this franchise as they developed Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game before. The upcoming game, Scott Pilgrim EX, boasts an original narrative penned by Bryan Lee O’Malley, who is the brains behind the series.
In the game, Scott and Ramona are a couple, so their story won’t be about how they first met. During my test play, there were three of us – myself, an individual from Tribute Games, and another press member – participating together. To ensure the game offers a lot to keep players coming back, characters from Tribute have created seven characters that can be played.
Among the characters that stand out most are Scott and Ramona, yet players will also have the opportunity to manage some of Scott’s adversaries. Each character possesses a distinctive gameplay approach with tailored combo sequences. To illustrate, Ramona is quite nimble, while Lucas delivers substantial damage but moves more sluggishly.
In simpler terms, I don’t often play games like Scott Pilgrim EX, but I was pleasantly surprised by how easily I could start playing it. The controls are simple and user-friendly, so beginners shouldn’t have any issues enjoying themselves. For more experienced players, the game provides varying levels of difficulty that will challenge their skills.
One thing I found particularly appealing is that Scott Pilgrim EX deviates from typical beat ’em up games. Instead, the developer on-site has coined the term “‘adventure beat ’em up’.” The game incorporates both permanent and temporary progression systems for characters, infusing it with a hint of role-playing game (RPG) elements.
In the course of missions, players accumulate funds which can be utilized to acquire amulets that enhance character abilities. This common pool of money is distributed among all players participating in the same session, and any purchases made are also communal within the group. The exception being HP restoration, as it isn’t shared; thus, there’s a tactical aspect when deciding how to allocate the funds for optimal benefit.
Through the new system, players have the ability to construct builds, some of which can be incredibly potent. For instance, one such build enables the player to generate income each time they successfully deflect an attack.
As you delve into these charts, you’ll encounter events akin to side missions found in role-playing games (RPGs). These elective encounters not only add excitement but also contribute significantly to your character’s development, making the main challenges less formidable.
Regarding the bosses, the visuals of the settings, characters, and adversaries are simply outstanding – they certainly live up to the franchise’s reputation. This game is a labor of love for Tribute Games, and you can feel that passion in every frame of the animation. Scheduled for release in 2026, Scott Pilgrim EX has all the makings of an exceptional game to play cooperatively with friends.
Feel free to share your opinions on our sneak peek of Scott Pilgrim EX. On TopMob forum, tell us what aspects of the game you’re particularly looking forward to.
Additionally, don’t miss the previews of upcoming games from Gamescom 2025 – Phantom Blade Zero, LEGO Voyagers, Valor Mortis, Super Meat Boy 3D, and Hollow Knight: Silksong.
This version maintains the original meaning while using a more conversational tone and avoiding overly technical language.
