So, when Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game launched in 2010, he was eager to play it. He didn’t anticipate, however, just how memorable his first experience would be. A mix of good timing, chance, and a lot of caffeine turned a regular gaming session into something special, as he explained:
I remember when the original Scott Pilgrim game came out, someone brought over some Four Loko, and I didn’t realize it had caffeine. I had a couple, and later found out it was like drinking a whole pot of coffee! I couldn’t sleep, so I started playing Scott Pilgrim at 10 p.m. and ended up playing straight through until 1 p.m. the next day. I actually beat the game because I was so wired from the caffeine. I’m not usually a fan of all-nighters – I never even pulled them in college – but I got completely hooked and maxed out all the levels.
So, I was thinking about Grabinski and the original Scott Pilgrim game. If he’d played it when it first came out, he’d have been pretty young, maybe late 20s. Even then, staying up all night to beat it would’ve been rough on him – the guy really loves his sleep! But the really wild part is what was in Four Loko back then. In 2010, when the game launched, it wasn’t just alcohol – it had caffeine, taurine, and guarana mixed in! Can you believe that? But the FDA and a bunch of states stepped in, and by the end of the year, they forced the company to take all that stuff out. Everything they sell now is just straight alcohol, thankfully.
Essentially, Grabinski almost pulled an all-nighter playing Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game. If the game had been released just a bit later, he probably still would have played it – he’s a big fan of video games, as he mentioned – but it might have taken him weeks to finish. As the show was wrapping up, Brian and I talked about how great it would be to have another game made. We asked if we could meet with the team to discuss it. What was really enjoyable was that my role was simply sharing ideas in meetings – I got to be a fan and watch the talented team bring those ideas to life. They did all the hard work, and then I got to see these amazing results.
Grabinski downplayed his role in creating Scott Pilgrim EX, jokingly admitting he wasn’t actually that humble. He explained he was mostly a source of ideas, as he was busy working on his own film, Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, and didn’t have time to be heavily involved in the game’s production. He gave most of the credit for the game’s development to Tribute Games, the team that created and published Scott Pilgrim EX.
Despite publicly thanking the team and highlighting their work instead of taking credit himself, Grabinski clearly felt proud of his involvement. He described his role as simply participating in virtual meetings and offering input as an enthusiastic supporter. Grabinski then went on to say:
Sometimes, someone on the team would be stuck on something simple, like naming a store in the game – they wanted something similar to Hot Topic but couldn’t think of a name. I’d suggest something silly, like “Cold Topic,” and then it would actually end up in the game, even being sold at a real Hot Topic! It’s a bit ridiculous – I just throw out funny ideas and suddenly they’re part of the game. I even got my wish to play as Robot 01, which is now possible. Honestly, what more could I ask for?
