As a die-hard fan of the Scream franchise who grew up watching these movies, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about Scream 7. The news that Courteney Cox hinted at her potential return is thrilling, but it also raises concerns about the absence of key characters like Gale Weathers and Dewey Riley.

While I enjoy slashers, paranormal stories, and films that are both scary and humorous, my ideal horror movie will always be an entry in the Scream franchise. Since the original 1996 movie is my all-time favorite, I’m excited for Scream 7. It will be interesting to see Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) with a family and to learn who the other cast members are.

However, Courteney Cox recently gave an interview about Scream 7 that made me nervous. While there are a lot of intense and memorable Scream 7 fan theories and people have different opinions, every fan has been hoping to hear more details from the cast members themselves. What did Cox say and what could it mean for the next installment in the horror franchise?

What Did Courteney Cox Say About Scream 7?

Scream 7: What Did Courteney Cox Say About The Horror Sequel?

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share the thrilling news I heard at the Rock4EB charity event in September 2024 – Courteney Cox herself hinted about Scream 7! Can you imagine it? Gale Weathers is back on our screens once again!

“I’m not officially signed on. I’m not, but there will be a ‘Scream 7.’”

Later on, the star discussed the heartbreaking demise of a cherished character and expressed her hope that he might reappear in the upcoming horror sequel. As Cox put it:

I can see why they took that action, yet oh my, what a pity! Fans of ‘Scream’ absolutely adore the character Dewey. It seems crucial for them to find a solution.

I think that Cox’s comments brings up a major problem with Scream 7: the movie needs more legacy characters than just Sidney Prescott. Since Cox hasn’t signed a contract to come back as Gale Weathers, that could mean that Gale isn’t going to come back to the slasher franchise, which would be a shame. Gale needs to have a strong storyline in Scream 7, if Cox does come back. She’s just as crucial a character as Sidney since she’s clever and often gets close to Ghostface since she’s always reporting on the drama and action. It would feel like something was missing if Cox didn’t reprise her role.

It was fitting for Cox to remark that everyone cherishes and yearns for Dewey Riley (David Arquette). Although it may have appeared necessary for a significant death in the 2022 version of Scream, I believe that eliminating Dewey was a poor decision because he was such an amiable character. He brought a comforting warmth to every scene he was in, which contrasted nicely with the harsher, malicious characters like Ghostface. With Dewey gone, there aren’t many endearing, iconic characters left who could reappear in the franchise.

In the upcoming Scream 7, it might not be suitable to bring back Dewey through hallucinations like Sam Carpenter experiences with Billy Loomis in Scream (2022) and Scream 6. It would also be challenging to have Gale recall Dewey without making it feel overly sentimental or cheesy, which doesn’t align with the tone of the Scream series.

2022 saw Neve Campbell discussing her role in “Scream 6” with Variety, and she even hinted at potential future appearances, stating:

I didn’t perish, so I’ll be around, and given Gale’s robustness, she might never meet her end, although one can never truly predict the future.

In the latest Scream film, it’s wonderful to have Sidney back on screen, but her strength seems diminished without Gale and Dewey by her side since they’ve shared a lifetime of camaraderie and survived harrowing ordeals together. It’s quite disheartening to imagine that the dynamic trio, who overcame initial friction between Sidney and Gale, won’t appear in another Scream movie together.

What Happened To Courteney Cox’s Scream Character Gale Weathers Throughout The Franchise?

Scream 7: What Did Courteney Cox Say About The Horror Sequel?

Gale Weathers is a captivating character who evolves significantly across the Scream movie series, and I find her one of my personal favorites. In the Scream series, she initially serves as a reporter covering Ghostface’s arrival in Woodsboro, California. Her relationship with Sidney Prescott is strained due to their opposing views on Cotton Weary’s guilt.

Gale’s journalism journey and her romantic bond with Dewey Riley are pivotal aspects of her character development. As a strong, no-nonsense woman and him being kind-hearted and naive, they complement each other beautifully, demonstrating that opposites indeed attract. They first meet in the movie “Scream” and their relationship evolves across the series. In “Scream 2”, “Scream 3”, and “Scream 4”, Gale maintains a similar role, although her involvement lessens in the 2022 version of the film. Due to Gale’s move to New York City for hosting a morning show and pursuing a new life, she and Dewey eventually divorce. In an intense, dark, and terrifying scene from “Scream 6”, Gale confronts Ghostface. Fans eagerly anticipate her return in “Scream 7”, where they hope she will emerge victorious against Ghostface once more.
